If you want to do it (or just for future reference):

• find a trading outpost
• park your ship near it, not on the pads
• you'll see waves of ships landing and taking off, five at each time (or four if you're using one of the pads)
• sit on top of the trading outpost, put some good music, relax and observe the traffic.

Exotics makes a very specific sound when landing, so you may keep some attention to that too. Shouldn't take too long to see one.

On starships, the logic is the following: you need the prior resource on the "hierarchy" for building the next drive.
So... copper for the red star drive; then there you get cadmium for green stars, and so on.

I find this aspect to be hardly an inconvenience. The bigger probablem is how much less resources anything gives you vs how much more resources everything spends.

Everything stabilizes nicely once you got some upgrade mods.
