There are a lot of options for play styles too. If you wanna fight you can, but if you don't you can absolutely avoid pretty much 99% of combat and just explore, or collect ships, or a whole host of other things... that's what I like about it, one day I may feel like going guns blazing, but tomorrow I just wanna cruise some planets.... and you can do that, with ship and multitool slots you can have one character set up to do anything.

I usually use them to round out my balanced expeditions, or fill in gaps like sending three Industrial types and two Support, so I can send another three Industrial types and two Supports on another Mining expedition.

Though I noticed I only have three Exploration types, so I want to get at least 3 more.
