Early on, freighters aren't much, but they're extra, mobile storage, ground spawn for all vehicles, and a mobile base if you're more of the venturing type.
Aside from that you can also upgrade them, command your fleet on them to make even more passive money and resources, etc.
I have my freighter set up w multiple storage containers and I've amounted so much money I will never stop to mine a basic resource that can't be stockpiled and bought from a space station in bulk cause I made it part of my routine to buy it all before venturing into a new star system.
