i believe the presence of a battery allows for greater acceleration due to regenerative braking providing power to the battery, which can then be used when the loco needs to accelerate

i think that could help with providing a bit more power in initial acceleration since a lot of via rail long distance trains are really long

if you've got a lot of downhill braking zones the battery electric basically gives you free juice by doing regenerative braking instead of traditional

it's not humongous power savings but there's a canadian truck manufacturer doing the same thing for heavy logging trucks etc. that just got approved by environment canada to start selling em

I think for their stuff it was a good 20ish percent fuel savings over a traditional mechanical transmisison - but that maffs gets muddled up and isn't directly applicable for trains because they're already doing diesel motor spinning a generator and running at a constant RPM.

Yeah, they could feasibly do suburban movements on battery as well then fire the generators back up when they’re out of city limits.

Anywhere you’re using an electric motor already a battery with a decent controller behind it is generally a positive. Doesn’t seem to really matter what the application is unless it’s stationary plant at a fixed load

Unfortunately, none of these very unique engines were preserved beyond the late 1980's maybe early 1990's

I mean according to the old railpage site thats down now in 1979 tenders were called for 100 vehicles which would have been 8 regional xpts that would go to canberra, albury, dubbo etc and then 6 interurban xpts to run to newcastle wollongong etc

it was originally for single unit railcars, with the option of a push pull train for service to Wollongong, Newcastle and Canberra
