When Gilles drove a lap with only 3 wheels on his car
Anyone remember Prost gp
Me
Patrick Depailler
Canada
i like how he still drives very fast despite the stupid conditions, not afraid to crash his car and the camera
put a camera on Gilles' Ferrari and you probably get the same result
yo guys im new in this server
coincidentally, this onboard was from the same grand prix where gilles won his first grand prix.
i just started watching the 1979 season, and ligier are so competitive
front row lockout for laffite and depailler
and grand slam for laffite
in the first race, argentina
if only
It is like the only effective ground effect car earlier in the year
So yeah makes sense
Everyone else just copies the Lotus 79
Which although class of the field in 78 is actually a compromised car
compromised how?
There was a Group 1 spec Chevrolet Camaro fitted with a 350ci V8 engine. What model of engine did it use? http://www.touringcarracing.net/Pages/1975 Cars.html https://historicdb.fia.com/car/chevrolet-camaro-350 http://tech-racingcars.wikidot.com/chevrolet-camaro-mk-ii
in 1980 iirc they finished second in the championship
i mean, they dominated.
only negative is lotus' infamous reliability
because Brabham relied on only 1 driver, otherwise it was them
the Ligier generated too much downforce which broke the rims, the suspensions..
take off some downforce then?
first time hearing this
oh wait 1969 high wing era
yeah but that was because the mounting points on the suspension were too fragile then
It isn’t a full ground effect car
It is still an almost wings car
Or I should say it wasn’t fully developed
Think the bigger issue is that the tub wasn’t stiff enough
lotus 78 or 79?
Both
by the time chapman tried to improve they banned skirts
81 we all know...
As usual when Lotus has to compete with others on the same technical ideas
the double chassis
They basically latch onto previously undeveloped ideas first to get an advantage but then never keep it up
Also a lot of them weren’t even Chapmans
they never won two consecutive seasons, come to think of it
I think the closest they got was with Clark
62-65 should have potentially all been Clark championships
64 was hill's in my opinion
but clark was one lap away from the championship
what happened in 62?
64 was also reliability with 2 laps to go...
hill was so consistent that year that a second place doesn't count towards the championship?
clark only finishes 4 races?
that lotus 25 needed some refining
Well yes
I think 64 may feature the best fight for the championship of all time by just ability of the drivers
and in 1963 clark's first place doesn't count towards the championship...
if a car doesn’t fall apart right after the checkered flag, then it’s too heavy!!
Colin Chapman or sth
Senna showed up late to the 1993 San Marino GP because McLaren didn't have the money to pay him on time
Technically, RedBull Ford actually existed since they did use Cosworth power at the start
What is aerodynamicss can you give full information pleaseeeeee
senna with a bird
Carlos Reutemann Enzo Ferrari & Gilles Villeneuve
Mario Andretti and Phil Hill have the championships, but Eddie Cheever has the experience. In terms of F1 starts, he is America's most experienced F1 driver, with 128 starts to his name. Sure, he doesn't have the points or wins or championships as Andretti, but he lasted longer than most American drivers who come in to the sport.
So, off the ba...
"Let Michael pass for the championship"
i finished watching 1979
so, how did you enjoy it
It was a great season
Wolfgang Von Trips
Villeneuve robbed
he was not consistent enough
He wasn't, he made too many mistakes. Jody deserved it and Gilles understood
learnt a lot
great season as well
i can imagine the storylines written back then
first ligier dominance, then gilles winning two races, then a turbo winning, and then williams dominating
wild
scheckter didn't win the most races, but was the most consistent
and why did depailler go hang-gliding?
Ferrari's wasn't the bets car, the Transverse gearbox wasn't adequate to the new ground effect cars and it led to the disastrous 1980 season. Williams became the best as soon as they solved some tweaks with the ground effect of their car, while Ligier couldn't keep developing the car at the same pace as the remaining teams and lost their edge. Depailler's crash also didn't help because Laffite wasn't properly a good development driver.
They got Ickx
i mean, he had a lot of experience
and i know that ligier are going to win two races next year
i mean 1980
Ickx was a bit of imposed by Gitanes, who wanted a French speaking driver on the team, but he wasn't motivated anymore and hated ground effect single seaters, so he was never giving 100%´
jarier and?
Geoff Lees
an earlier Laffite-Jabouille combination could have been the trick
unless it also leads to Ducarouge leaving the team
Probably, as Jbaouille was a renowned technician and wanted to have his say on the team
Showed the possibilities with him when he started designing the cars…
you’re talking bout the 1982 model?
Massa during the 2002 Italian GP
Felipe Massa became the first driver to wear the HANS device during a Formula One race!
and also the first ever driver to receive a 10-place grid penalty for causing a collision...
but he didn't serve it...
clever trick by sauber
and i didn't know that
but they did win the constructors' in 1982 and 83
in normal circumstances they also clinched the driver's title in 82
you know, when both drivers can compete in all of the season rather than 0
But Jabouille was a great technician, just not easy to work with. And oit could have helped Ligier a llot if he raced for them in 1981 and 1982 as expected, without the injuries
i mean he was great technically as a driver
but his three major involvements post driving for ligier/peugeot were all disasters that were at least partly of his making
Yes, even if Peugeot was a success in WSC in 1991-1993
But he was a kinda complciated as a team manager
i think he left because he, as a backmarker, held up the leaders
At Ligier he was injured after the 1980 Canadian GP crash, he didn't start the seaosn because he was in pain and out of shape, and when made his comeback, he couldn't be comeptitive anymore, so he left mid-season to become technical director
yeah i know he was injured
ok this is one of the other jean-pierres, beltoise or jarier
that would be Jarier
Jarier replaced Jbaouille on the first races, then he was signed by osella
That scene with the backmarkers was in 1983, the Ligier was good but underpowered due to the Cosworth DFV, nad Jarier became one of the hardest drivers to lap by
one of the worst rules were drivers having to fight past lapped traffic
But I believe it's fair that way like in indyCars, now if you're fighting for the points and are being lapped you have to slow down and compromise your pace
Blue flags should only be used when there is obstruction
there was no blue flags yet, you might think it's bad that was how it was
if you're that much faster you should clean lapped traffic easily
ruined two of senna's races
1988 italy
Yes, but not the way they do it now
1990 brazil
luckily some drivers used their mirrors and knew if that was a lapped car or not
He ruined himself in both
yeah senna was impatient
sadly for him
i have seen some drivers getting out of the way but not all
In Monza in 1988 Schelesser went out of the way, but Senna tried an impossible overtake; the smae with Nakajima in Brazil in 1990, even if there Nakajima could do a little better
i mean there was a straight coming up
and senna had the power advantage
easy overtake
Yes, sire, he decided to force on the chicane, Schlesser could go nowhere
i mean nakajima
he tried to overtake nakajima and lost his front wing
Yes, he also forced a bit, also Nakajim wasn't properly running slow

Car by Roelofs Engineering, driven by legend Nicky Pastorelli
The prototype 4WD F1 car by Cosworth. Only used for testing and experimenting and never officially raced
Trevor Taylor was the test driver for the project.
Pretty sure Costin went out in it as well
justice for him ✊
He was driving on F5000 abnd doing sports car races after his F1 stint with Lotus and BRP
he should have gotten more, he had such a stellar start in f1
true, him as well
it’s bizarre what happened to Lotus second drivers
on first glance they seem bad compared to like Clark or Fittipaldi
but then you notice they were properly good then got into an accident and never recovered
Who wwas involved? Only know about Arundell
I was thinking of Trevor Taylor
I don't recall any serious crash of him
yeah im quite confused, but it seems like his crash with Willy Mairesse at the belgium gp changed him?
from that point on he was nowhere
ahhhh yes, I was forgetting that
now the only season of the 1970s i'm yet to watch is 1972.
its about as meh as 71 tbf
the funny part about 1971 is that how other teams keep thinking that tyrrell is illegal but it's not
ah? because of the airbox?
that the tyrrell was the only competitve dfv in the beginning of the season mixing it with the 12-cylinders

My favourite F1 non champion Elio De Angelis ✨
Back when McLaren was in a damp patch in terms of performance. In the 1990s, McLaren had title sponsorship from Marlboro, with Ferrari also having some significant backing. But by the second half of the 90s, Marlboro was a bit miffed that McLaren was not delivering in terms of results, and decided to leave them at the end of the 1996 season. Thi...
The 1993 World Champion Alain Prost lapped Estoril in a time of 1m23.40s. This was largely a shakedown run and so the lap times may not be indicative of the performance of the car, but they were a long way from the pace of 1m21.50s set last week by Jacques Villeneuve in an old Williams-Renault FW17
when the first driver to shakedown your car is your luxury test driver and not your contracted full time drivers
yeah bc Coulthard was their new signing while Hakkinen was still recovering from this near-fatal crash at Adelaide
or its because Prost was just a better driver to get knowledge from the car based off his past experience
Glad Prost didn't join the team and instead Coulthard did. Prost was to old to compete plus the McLaren wasn't succesful that year
yeah he was 41 then, with the fast technological progress it would have been too hard
plus he was probably not interested in driving f1 anymore, he didn’t enjoy his 93 season all tbat much because of the media
Unless it was a winning car then he wasn’t interested
His lack of commitment to 1994 shows this
Tested the MP4-9 once at Estoril and decided nah
Of course there was the whole Frank stating he couldn’t drive in 94 because he was paid out but I’m sure they’d have just got around that if he really wanted to race
he should have known the problem with the /9 was the Peugeot engine!!
rather than signing with them for 98 😭 😭
would bave only ruined his legacy
they gave it for free initially right?
that was the initial plan, but they walked back at the last moment
mercedes logo?
1996 car
these look pretty small to me
probably the most cursed combination of livery and car ever
why does it looked like a toothpaste color 💀
tbf those are still the colors of the original livery that it's based off, the 1999 Focus's Martini livery
the blue and red are just swapped around
but yeah now that you mention that it does kinda look like toothpaste 😂
this is that same livery but on the 1999/2000 model Focus from the year before
ah i see lol 😂
if you're asking me, Martini easily
2nd best for me is the Repsol one they had in 93-94
I'm biased towards Repsol liveries
ah didnt know there was a repsol lancia livery
yea there was, seems like only Sainz ran it and it was after Lancia pulled out their manufacturer involvement

In 72 race starts as well
how was he classified
where?
ironically for a car with so many sponsors lotus was struggling to stay afloat
untrue, monaco had more laps than Indianapolis in F1 during the 2005 season
That’s because they ran a road course at Indy
They didn’t use the true oval
Just look at NASCAR oval lap counts
I assume Indycar uses less laps than NASCAR because of how much faster they go
Sometimes yes, other times no
Usually yes

i am going to be the sixth person here to mention the arrows a2
what about the A7
It has a big bump
even the A10 look at the roll bar headrest
the steering wheel in the 1989 arrows looks cool as well
ah?
Looks more like the 412t1 or t2
oh ok yeah it has the paddles
Also, the 1989 Ferrari was the first car with the paddles
Though actually back in 1979, Ferrari actually tested a electro-magnetic paddle shifting gearbox in the 312T with Gilles
@hardy ravine
but they used buttons initally
what happened?
None other than Gilles Villeneuve then proceeded to test it at Ferrari’s Fiorano test track, where he apparently completed 100 laps without a hitch. There was only one problem: he didn’t like it. “Despite this successful outcome,” Forghieri opined, “he was not convinced. Gilles said to me, ‘A steel shift lever will always be more reliable than electronics.’ The project was temporarily set aside. Mr Ferrari always accepted requests from Gilles.”

Williams is doing a throwback livery for the US Grand Prix this weekend. It looks great, but I'm more concerned with how fast the car is more than I am what it looks like.
But in 2004, Williams had the walrus car, and it wasn't very good. Then in 2005 the slip started more. BMW and Frank were falling out, and BMW decided that if Frank won't sel...

Was it made of magnesium or aluminum?
alu
Ah, 2005. The year Ferrari got nerfed in that era
Between 2000 and 2004, Michael Schumacher was a menace. Absolutely smashing every record in sight, and in two of those seasons, he dominated HARD with the F2002 and then the F2004.
But in 2005, some rule changes. The aero stuff was always happening but the FIA proposed three new rule sets for tyres that the teams had to pick from. When the team...
the magnesium car did only one race, the 1968 french gp
because magnesium is a totally safe material
so safe Surtees refused to drive it, and the only driver who did drive died when the car caught fire on lap 2
Jan Magnussen is proof that just because you don't make it into Formula One, you're a failure. Sports cars is a legitimate way of having a career, and he proved that.

Ah yes, the Forti FG01. Known for it's rather predictable lack of performance but also it is the last F1 car with an H Pattern Manual gearbox
All of that to only lose the race to Schumacher haha

The March 87P, technically the first Leyton House car
Which was basically just a modified Formula 3000 chassis with an F1 spec engine bolted to the back
Prost or Senna?
.truth
Prost > Senna
then made a great car for their first attempt, achieving 3 podiums
Maldonado or Stroll?
Who's crashing first?
why leyton house has such a nice livery
idk i fw this leyton house livery a lot
Aside from having a reputation of crashing quite a lot, Andrea De Cesaris also had the reputation of being quite the fast driver behind the wheel
In Spa 1991, he was quick enough to close in on Ayrton Senna and could've scored his own Nico Hulkenberg style podium finish and even a win. That was until his engine failed with just 3 laps to go
always quick
blew the doors off a bruno giacomelli who had just comfortably beaten 78 champion andretti the previous year
he got a lot of podiums, but not a win
i think there are blueprints of that car in a website called marchives
that Tyrrell slapped ngl
maldonado would be faster but then find a way to hit the wall
he was more crash prone
than stroll is
stroll only has 1 dnf this year from usgp sprint, not even an actual race
Old Stroll
Honestly, I feel like Leyton House and Ivan Capelli could've won the 1988 Japanese Grand Prix. If it wasn't for the engine conking out laps later, which Ivan stated, according to Adrian Newey's book, that he might have accidentally pressed the engine cut off switch instead of the anti roll bar switch (I think it was the anti roll bar switch that he was intending to use)
1990 french grand prix was more likely
It's crazy that Graham Hill never scored a British GP win while Damon did get a home race victory, he couldn't score any Monaco GP wins
Mr. Monaco's son
even on a Tyrrell
Yeah, if you know your history, particularly with Adrian Newey, you would know how similar in design the Williams FW14 is to the Leyton House 901
@urban timber
I've said it a few times now: The 90s is when the back of grid teams all started to fall off because the costs were too much. Most teams fell by the wayside because of not having enough money, but in 1993, Minardi merged with Scuderia BMS to survive. But then they attracted some more money through investement from someone who already owned a tea...

The Ferrari 250 GTO is a legendary grand tourer produced by Ferrari from 1962 to 1964, built to be a competitive race car for the FIA's Group 3 Grand Touring Car category. It is powered by a front-mounted Tipo 168/62 Colombo V12 engine, which gave it impressive speed and handling. The name "250 GTO" stands for "250 cubic centimeters per cylinder

For technical freaks!
︀︀The front steering Tie Rod End was designed to be on the middle of the upright. Big mistake because when the car starts rolling into the corner it get under tension and it prevents against rolling. Meaning it works like a progressive stiffening anti rollbar the more roll/higher cornering is happening. Resulting high steering forces and huge under steering

First there was Brooklands, then there was a war, then Silverstone came along, along with Brands Hatch. But in the middle of it all was Aintree, a horse racing circuit just north of Liverpool that hosted the British Grand Prix four times, and some non championship races as well.
But it just seems odd. It's probably Britain's forgotten circuit. ...

Prost > Senna
disagree however you want @rose radish , the command is called truth for a reason
it isnt the truth this time
I wont even get into the argument because i dont want to win an easy one
very brave
elaborate to me why, I am very curious
Who allowed this droid to have opinions
prost scored more points than senna in their time as teammates
even 1988 prost got more points than senna
racecraft > "raw pace"
And Senna won more races, both 88 and 89, way more pole positions. His performances at Monaco, in the rain, show he was more than "raw pace". They were both excellent, legendary drivers, who is best is down to preferences and what you choose to use as metrics
senna was more up and down and prost was more consistent. that led to prost having to drop a lot of points in 1988, leading him to lose this championship
he was a bit too ahead of his time, with the championship not rewarding every finish yet
in 88 Senna beat him cause he was a bit more consistent than in 89, where he either won or DNFed
Prost did the "to finish first, first you must finish"
2 years later all scores counted
2 years too late LOL
but it's fine, he's the first driver to score 100+ pts in a season
yeah
and even if senna's win in suzuka 89 stood it wouldn't matter because he dnf'd in adelaide
none of this makes one better than the other. they were pretty evenly matched. They would both be worthy champions in both 88 and 89
not satisfying outcome for a fandom!!
fans are notoriously too biased to answer questions like that
i'm just glad we had a chance to witness them in equal machines, fighting point per point, turn per turn
Formula 1's past has always been characterised by iconic engines and unforgettable sounds. There were V10s, V12s, the era of turbocharged monsters, 1.5-liter engineering gems with 8, 12 or 16 cylinders in the post-war period. But in the midst of all this, one engine reigned supreme for almost 20 years, achieving 155 wins and becoming a F1 legen...

Hey
… hello?
Guys while searching in some old toys I found this car. It looks like Colin McRae's Subaru Impreza (but thought first that it was a NASCAR car). It has the number 5, in the rear wing says "Rally Touring" and has 555 sponsor but censored. I don't know where Motul comes from since I searched pictures and there's no Motul sponsor. It came with a pink and a green van (since all of them have the same size).
Yes

Literally
They put cameras in Riccardo Patrese's Williams FW13 during the 1989 F1 Preseason testing, the angles are really nice, never saw them before (specially I like #5, it gives sense of speed)
The best engine sound in a F1 car (in my opinion)
Not counting V10s from late 90s-early 00s
yeah it does sound nice

second to last angle is noce as well

I'm currently seeing the 1984 season, and I saw Piercarlo Ghinzani's crash in Kyalami. The Osella looks absolutely destroyed. How did he survive that?
underrated team

losing their star driver that could have won said race?
Yeah
Nelson Piquet's head got crushed
Australia
Piquet pursued Martini down Brabham Straight and veered to the right when he spotted Ghinzani, too late, through a wall of water. The Lotus collided with the Osella, whose right rear wheel grazed the head of the Brazilian driver. Piquet spun while Ghinzani was propelled against the outside wall. Both cars came to a stop in the run-off area. Piquet was uninjured, but Ghinzani was left his car limping on his left foot.

In 1975, Emerson Fittipaldi was at the peak of his powers and had a competitive McLaren. Sure, he'd just lost the title to Niki Lauda, but if McLaren could sort it out for 1976 he would be in contention to take back the title and go up to three for himself, and if history repeated itself, it would mean all three Brazilian champions would have th...
Old F1 was so much more swaggy. I feel like all the cars loom the same now. But everything felt experimental and new.
And yet we still see people who say that the halo isn't important.

In 1987, Nelson Piquet lost control of his Williams and destroyed the car at the exact same spot that fellow countryman Ayrton Senna lost his life. After which, he wasn't the same. He lost 80% of the depth perception in his eyes, which... is... sub-optimal at best.

In the early 90s, it was established pretty quickly that the Renault engine was the engine to have. But getting one was hard work. So when Ligier owner Cyril de Rouvre was sent down in 1994, Flavio saw an opening. And at the end of 1994, Michael Schumacher was spotted driving a Ligier. But he drove for Benetton!

In 1984, Porsche teamed up with McLaren and won three drivers' titles and two constructors' titles in a row. Then it was Honda's turn to dominate with McLaren and Williams.
But in 1990, Porsche announced they were back with a V12 engine and were going to be supplying the Footwork Team, otherwise known as Arrows. But the whole thing was just one...
its quite annoying they then cooked a nice V10 engine, but canned it before it was put in an F1 car
but then they uncanned it, made it more sensible, and put it in the Carrera GT
terrible engine
that said the 1991 footwork was as much of a problem
their average deficit to the fastest car even from france onwards barely improved if at all
I'm watching the 1984 season right now and what annoys me is how long it took them to realise the drivers' legs aren't protected enough
Pironi, Brundle, Cecotto
Peterson died due to the same reason also
perhaps
matter of debate whether you consider that is what ultimately killed peterson
the hospital, doctors and attempted surgery have all been criticised by the people who were there
for sure even if ronnie had lived he'd have found it hard to race again let alone be even back to his best
I’m pretty sure it was 1988 when they started requiring the front axle to be in front of the driver's feet for safety.
Jacques Laffite's crash at the 1986 british GP is an example of why that made that requirement
I mean just look at this, literally your legs are the crumple zone
but still many people had leg injuries and i'm not even done with my 80s f1 races

2005 V8 Supercars - Queensland Raceway - Jason Richards Roll Over at Queensland Raceway. Includes Cameron McLean roll over in the Porsche Carrera Cup.
Arriving in Milan, Brambilla is immediately placed in an artificial coma. He suffers from a severe concussion and his days are in danger, even if his condition is stable. Peterson is immediately X-rayed: twenty-seven fractures are detected, including eight in the right leg and four in the right foot which is almost crushed. But the main concern is the blood circulation in the legs. The Swedish driver risks amputation. However, an immediate operation is not clearly necessary, and Ronnie could be transported to Sweden or Switzerland, a country with eminent surgeons in this field. But the Milanese doctors decide to operate in the evening. Staffan Svenby, the driver's manager, agrees. Ronnie Peterson does too. He is surrounded by Colin Chapman, Mario Andretti and his friend Reine Wisell. The intervention begins around 9 p.m. and Professor Sid Watkins attends. It lasts two and a half hours and runs smoothly. The vital signs are correct and the patient is transfused. He is then transferred to intensive care where he finds Vittorio Brambilla.
At 11 p.m. the doctors hold a press conference. If they refuse to comment on Brambilla's condition, they say that Peterson's life is not in danger and that he will even be able to walk again "in two to three months".
Unfortunately, according to many specialists, Italian surgeons operated in a hurry. So early intervention creates risks of embolism. This occurs during the night while Ronnie, on sedatives, did not wake up. A fat embolism suns him. His lungs and kidneys are affected. It is placed under artificial respiration. Doctors are now struggling to maintain their oxygen levels in the blood. But they quickly discover irreversible brain damage. His condition is desperate. Informed first of the seriousness of the situation, Emerson Fittipaldi warns Chapman and Andretti that their friend is dying. At 9:11 a.m., the death of Bengt Ronald Peterson was officially pronounced.
To illustrate my point
Can anyone name some F1 cars that could be considered the fastest of their year but didn't win the championship? The only one that springs to mind for me is the McLaren MP4-20 from 2005. Any ideas?
fw16, lotus 78 in 1977
Williams from 2002 to the end of 2003. They had the most powerful engine on the grid but was severely let down by its aerodynamics and its subpar chassis
FW14
good shout on the last btw
FW11, Ferrari 248, F2008, RB5, W12, F399, MP4/15
Ferrari 375 (1951)
Lotus 25 (1962 and 1964)
VW 5 Vanwall (1958)
happened a lot more than you tihnk
most of those are based on super lap times
based on that i'd say the 65 P261 BRM too but that is mostly because Clark isn't at Monaco
i could go on
Ferrari with a multitude of cars in both 66 and 68
Lotus with their first iteration of the 49 in 1967
when it has the new Cosworth DFV
JS11 in 1979 is a shout
As is the JS11/15 tbf
That just has a thing with its ground effect that destroys the wheel rims and also affects handling and balance
i cri everitiem
they really did like Ferrari in 2022
hey they'll finally win a title
I also saw some mentions of the 2007 McLaren or the 2009 red bull
@paper fossil I feel like the SF71H deserves a mention. I think that was the closest ferrari got to toppling merc back then
Could be some recency bias on my end too but I think we could add the MCL38 too. They won the wcc but im convinced they could've won the wdc that year too
i mentioned the latter already
Yea I saw right after I sent lol
But the ferrari just had quicker lap times then?
I definitely wanna make a case for the 126C2 as well. Another wcc winner that totally should've won the wdc too
Ferrari just had a god awful 82
definitely
they just had the unfortunate luck of losing both the drivers that started the season
Small case for the Ferrari 412 T2 as well i think, certainly wasn't the best aero wise but the V12 from 1995 certainly made up for it in power. Even The Michael tested it and claimed he could've won thr championship in that car
y'all see the vision??
we could say the 49 in 1967 as well but it was introduced only in the dutch grand prix
no no you're right
Agreed. Some people could argue against it given the success of the 49B and 49C but I've always counted B variants as separate cars
they are separate cars
Williams FW17
Damon Hill and David Coulthard made too many errors
Id also say RE30B, they got 10 poles out of 16 races, but DNFed cause of reliability of their turbos and engines
I remember watching through the 82 season not too long ago and keeping track of how many times a renault got pole and then dnf-ed
Not just Hill and DC but the whole team was on the backfoot in 95 some of their pit stops and strategy calls were rough
This is why Hill was fired from Williams because of that season
I really that race 😮
But still won the championship in 96
Yeah still got laid off
then williams fell off after 1997
Troof
I just love to appreciate Fernando's aggressive understeer driving style he had in the early 2000s, most especially 2005
Enjoy the speed, acceleration & sound!
i did that like one month ago, watched the 82 season
84 brabham also
nelson piquet got nine vespas
but so many dnfs
yeah his 84 season is wild
so many poles and just 2 wins. took him like 6 races to finish one
Man that year was brutal. Renaults were blowing up within 5 laps, the brabham was pretty much a test mule for the bmw engine and ferrari lost both their stars
11 different race winners in 1 season too
1982 monaco last few laps were funny
In 1995, Eddie Jordan was in a spot of bother. He needed a major new backer to help propel his team forward, as he had ambitions of making the front of the grid. Sasol had departed, and there was nothing in 1995 to replace it.
But, just before the start of the 1996 season, he revealed he'd got some backing from a major new sponsor in Benson & H...
I'm wondering if there were more cars where its performance shocked its own team like how the F2004 did with Ferrari
Probably the FW14B or the Brawn GP car
I read in Watching the Wheels how much it shocked Damon
Easily top 3 of my favorite Jordans with the first one being the 191 and the second one the EJ13
that March is so goofy. but then it was just to find some sponsors iirc
really like these handpainted numbers on the 1922 Targa Florio
Just some months and it will be 30 years since F1 Digital+ first transmission (1996 British Grand Prix)
1996 German Grand Prix you mean
Im sincerely not sure since there is a video on YouTube by a channel named "mclauren" that is the 1996 British Grand Prix with other angles and claims to be the first F1 Digital first transmission
(Not grandstand angles btw)
But there was a race in 96
Yeah but F1 Digital launched just before the German Grand Prix

Imagine Ayrton won the world championship in 1989… Alain Post and Senna were so close
what would it change
Thats the 49 right
yknow whats suprising, is that every race that they finished, Senna was always ahead of Prost at the end when they both finished (aside from Brasil)
Senna had way more DNFs that season, whereas Prost took it easier
Frr
im not surprised, Prost used his brain and won the title in a more favourable season
it should have served him as well in 88, as he scored more points overall, but 11 best results you know the drill
“Out, oh my goodness, this is fantastic”
“This is what they were fearing might happen during the race, that means to say that Prost has won the world championship”
Prost wasn't that good in 1989
it is probably his second weakest season of his career after 1982
where Arnoux was surprisingly a match for him
88 is the one he should have probably won
how? because he didn't win that many races?
I wish Prost knew to do this sooner in his F1 career (1984)
^
83 as well tbf
plus too many mistakes
82 they had the garbage reliability of the electronics
89 he is genuinely no match for senna for most of the season
but senna is a higher bar than arnoux
heh
i say this as the most diehard prost loyalist
nah you're right in races he was outpaced by Senna
wasnt the case in 88
well, not all the time at least
He also seemed to out qualify and beat Senna in the race at the French Grand Prix's
prost is just goated at paul ricard
genuinely
he won there 4 times
+1 win at Dijon
it took Senna so many seasons to win a race in Brazil
he really was propelled by his home crowd
Prost still holds the record for most wins at Brasil
breakdown of 1982 qualifying
with all the issues filtered out
in arnoux's favour by 0.064%
the only thing i'd argue is that prost has a injury post monaco on his foot that he doesn't recover from until germany
from germany onwards he stabilises his advantage
What about races?
yes well
I know Prost wasn't a real good qualifier like he was in races
will get to that eventually
i mean
he wasn't as good a qualifier as senna
but he comprehensively beat most of all his other teammates in qualifying
Im saying he made positions in races, he had like 33 poles and 51 wins comapred to sennas 65 poles and 41 wins
and after being teammates with lauda chose to prioritise setting up a car for races
but to say he isn't a real good qualifier is wrong
perhaps he was a better racer yes
He def got better after the 1984 season
often wondered about that
i'm not so sure
his qualifying advantages over lauda in both 84-85 are similar
Poor Damon
lauda just had a terrible 1985 season
lauda probably does a better job in races to prost in 1985 but because there is more competitive teams and he is wrong side of luck he doesn't achieve as good results
in 84 the mclaren is so far ahead of the field thanks to fuel economy
Haha, 1986 German Grand Prix, both McLarens run out of fuel on the penultimate lap
yes two years later
when the amount of fuel available to the turbos has decreased
in 1984 the tag porsches best advantage is fuel economy
that's the thing, the TAG Porsche seems to have stagnated in terms of performance
Yup 220L to 195L
they can run a great level of boost while being more economical than other manufacturers
thats why they ditched it for the Honder
did Porsche genuinely develop the engine or not?
lauda and prost had an easier time in 1984 that is for sure
i've seen they've brought some updates to power and stuff
i think it says a great deal a driver of the level of alboreto could challenge prost for a championship
no disrespect but he isn't amazing
wow
i like michele
well, in 85 he was the only competition for the title to Prost
but his teammate comparisons say everything
true, he got "humiliated" by Berger and had to leave
some say the end of 85 just broke him and he never recovered. maybe he really was just too fragile psychologically to win a title
cause he did amazing stuff at Tyrrell given the material at hand
i mean there is also his 86 against johnasson
don't get me wrong stefan is just driving about to get results from attrition he isn't great just more competent than usual
but alboretos average gap in qualifying is quite low
when we are considering the driver johansson is
do you think they should have picked someone else to replace Rosberg in 87?
"At the Italian Grand Prix, Michele Alboreto missed Friday’s sessions following a rumored shower fall or motorbike accident. His teammate, Stefan Johansson, filled in during morning practice and was stunned to find Alboreto's qualifying car significantly more powerful than his own."
good shout
although im quite surprised with how quick his stock rose tbh
i often question the logic of johansson over palmer
probably just because he was at ferrari
and a podium finisher
Palmer was test driver at McLaren?
palmer compared better against alboreto eventually but that was 2 years away
the best choice would have been berger but it wasn't in their hands
keke always intended to retire
i know the british casters in Hunt and Walker were praising Palmer a lot
probably more Walker than Hunt
he merely moved to mclaren to get experience from a businessman like dennis before his new career
shmort
thereby sacrificing a chance in the fw11
if his mind was already out of F1..
yes
he had Nico to think about as well
that said the alboreto from 87 to 88 is different
his fall off vs berger is dramatic
so perhaps it wouldn't have made much difference
however i tend to think there is no way palmer could have been as far off peak alboreto as johansson was
in my watching of the 1985 season, found one more. senna just hit that curb.
i think i got some spoilers in the above messages
Same with mika hakkinen at the 1995 australian gp
and 1993
I thought those were the same crash
I don’t think the latter was a crash
unintentional aura
I kinda like 90's F1
Sure not as fast but the cars were more fun and sounded more violent
Anything until 2013 really
F1 also had its era of Group B like levels of power absurdness
Ngl the 80's turbo era was insane but nothing beats the 1995-2005 V10 era
in terms of what
https://youtu.be/uupZsfs_8s0?t=148 dont sleep on that turbo sound
Yesterday I was at Imola circuit, in Italy, for the Ayrton Senna Tribute event held for the 20th anniversary of the death of Ayrton.
One of the car I saw on track was this 1985 Lotus 97T F1 car which was able to achieve 3 victories (Senna won 2 and De Angelis 1), 2 second places and 4 third places. The car also achieved 8 pole positions. The 97T...
V10's were much louder and sounded way better than the 80's turbos
Sounded more like F1 cars
V12's were also insane cos of their sound despite them being less powerful than the V10's
Like the MP4/6 and 412T of the early 90's
A hotlap from the greatest of all time, enjoy!
And also Senna's technique was just mind-blowing
Most people don't understand that Senna did his signature throttle technique for traction and maintaining speed in corners rather than to spool up the turbos
412T2 sound 🤤

im not sure they were less powerful, but they were heavier and thirstier
and at some point it doesn't add up
Cos Senna drove more naturally aspirated cars than turbo in his career
it was still probably very convenient for turbos
yup it helped maintain boost pressure
mustve been hella useful for his first season with the Hart
Yup, he frequently asked his engineers if it was acceptable to
free-wheel with the clutch depressed in slow corners and hairpins
Also the engine had a unique monoblock design which helped it boost higher and to prevent the head gasket from blowing under extreme boost pressures
In his F1 career or overall?
Cause accounting full seasons, he drove five turbocharged cars and then five non-aspirated cars
Yeah 80 turbo and 81 naturally aspirated races
His Junior career used NA engines too I believe
Nah he drove 4 turbocharged cars and 6 naturally aspirated cars in his career
Wasn’t that Toleman naturally aspirated or smth?
Ahh nvm it’s turbo
Just read
I thought it had the cosworth dfv instead of a 4 cylinder turbo
to me, classic F1 is before 2000
classic for me is below 2010
I guess after ten years it would be considered classic for me
15-20 years ago i suppose
Was indy a good track when it was on the calendar
Same metric as with music, games, or movies
20 yrs ago is already retro or classic
I guess this channel's description needs to be updated to include anything in 2006 then
Such as the start of the V8 era of F1
Some footage that I could record of a testing day from the 2006 F1 Season.
Well, except for one team in 2006
The last of the V10 engines used in F1. They were only team using them in 2006 as part of a loophole regulations which allowed them to use them rather than the new high-revving V8 engines. The engine could only reach about 16,500 rpm, but still a great sound. Enjoy!

probably the loudest Ferrari 2000’s car era I ever heard
ngl out of the v10's the cosworths were the best sounding imo
they had that shrill scream
I reckon Cosworth was one of the few engine suppliers to have their V8s rev up to 19k RPM at the start of the V8 era

Nah they went to over 20k
20 years since the last 20k rpm engines
Nah that’s prob at 16k rpm
The 3.5L V10’s could only go to like 15k max I think
Also that might be a 3.0 V10
1995 or 1996 I think
its from b195 in 1995
It must have been weird to hear two cars still having the V10 engines in the 2006, albeit rev restricted, when all the other cars had unrestricted V8s
In 2005, the V10 era ended, and F1 was downsizing to V8s. When Alonso won the Chinese Grand Prix, it would be the last time a V10 car would win a race.
But in 2006, one team was on the grid, brand new to the sport, but was still running V10s... Did they not get the memo? Well, yes- But the thing was, Toro Rosso had risen from the ashes of Minar...
It sounds like a 1998 Tyrrell
They had a lot of ambition, but turned out to be absolute rubbish. Maki wanted to be in Formula One, had a lot of heart, but got a rude awakening when their car was about 150kg heavier than everyone else's. Even by 1970s standards it was a lot.
But they tried, at least. They had some backing, even if it was a bit iffy, they had a decent driver ...

In 2001, a fresh faced teenager from Oviedo in Spain joined the grid. 19 year old Fernando Alonso Diaz. Or just Fernando Alonso for short.
He did an entire season in a slow, underfunded car and drove for a team that looked like it might not even make the grid that year. But it was saved last minute by Paul Stoddart, and Alonso got to spend the ...
2001 minardi technically tarso marques beat Fernando Alonso in equal machinery
Michael Andretti and Mika Häkkinen unveiled the MP4/8 in 1993. At first, the lineup did not include Ayrton Senna, who was hesitant to commit because he wanted a race-by-race contract while questioning whether Ford’s engine could match Renault’s power. Senna ultimately secured the race seat, which pushed Häkkinen into a test-driver role. Later in the season, Häkkinen returned to racing by replacing Andretti for the final rounds.

Hello
and I've got to stop, because I've got a lump in my throat.
Thanks Murray walker
No problem Wolffe

Last time an Italian won a GP was in 2006, Fisichella won it in the Renault, And history has repeated again as Kimi Antonelli wins the Chinese Grand Prix

I didn’t know that McLaren Airlines exist
jesus pre 90s f1 cars used to be outrageously wide
I dont find this one on video. Does it even exist on video?
that ended badly
yup
Williams' downfall needs to be studied
While Ferrari were romping off to an easy title, behind them the battle was for runner up. And for a time, it was expected to be Williams and McLaren fighting for it. But both teams absolutely botched their cars- Williams with that Walrus Nose(tm) and McLaren had a car that couldn't go more than ten laps without blowing up.
So- It was Renault's...
Williams went from 123 points in 1997 to 38 points in 1998 lol
Who else here misses group b?
you mean deaths by the buckets? no thank you
Is there a reason that rally cars use space frame chassis and not a monocoque? Is it because of weight reasons? I dont really see a reason why they cannot use a carbon fibre monocoque
Boy group b rally was peak
Did you know you can see the Malaysian f1 circuit from their airport?
a red williams looks so weird to me
their Winfield liveries were pretty decent tbh
though yeah their 98 livery looked a little too much like a Ferrari
Which william livery do you prefer? I kinda like the Canon one more than the Rothmans
Canon 100%
my first exposure to F1 was through a snes game with big Nige, so Canon it is
