Some like to simply be gunmen and force the position forward. Some are pilots/drivers. Whatever you like to do, do it.

That’s not quite what I mean. Across multiple servers, when I try to pilot there’s a wildcat in the enemy spawn that has at least a tank defending it. And more often than not it’s the wildcat a tank and 2-3 other infantry or even a helicopter. When I do the same, my team just leaves me to die alone. Vice versa, then I’m a pilot my team will just leave the wildcat and enemy choppers alive.

Maps arent very good overall (I like Exposure and Iwo Jima and think redacted isnt awful, everything else ehhhh), specialists serve no purpose and could just be gadgets and kits, player flow isnt good, vehicles are overpowered if you have unlocks and completely garbage otherwise because of the prevalence of engineers so youre forced to fight bots for attachments, movement isnt good, controls feel muddy and not very responsive, vehicle physics arent very well done

Going back to 2042 from BF6 felt like a complete shock it felt so much worse

There’s a lot of conflicting things in 2042. The bloom and recoil, specialists, most of the map design is pretty ehhh with most of the best maps in the game being post launch maps, aerial vehicles are way too easy imo thanks to the map design having structures large enough to act as cover for them but not infantry, destruction is atrocious compared to other titles, etc

Granted some are doing it in cheeky ways, but still. The pass is not insurmountable even by now, and the intended way via weeklies is even buffed come next week onwards.

The design is to keep players playing, whether that be all at once(XP points) or over the course of the set course of weeklies.

Personally tried 2042 when it was originally released and had it refunded. Bought it again when it was €3 for the base game.
Playing it now because BF6 isn't available yet, and 2042 is better than it was, but still not great. BF6 made me feel like I did back in the BFBC2, BF3 and BF4 days. I was really enjoying it. Even people I've not connected with since BF4 was back playing BF6 beta. That tells you something.

See, I was the opposite. I tried closed weapons during the BF6 Beta after being vehemently opposed as I value player agency. I wanted to give it a fair shake though, so I loaded in. Chose Medic, game goes "okay so you will use an LMG."

Me: "No, I do not think I will."

I think that for locked weapons to work, they need to lean more into the specialties. Have a resource specialist that uses an LMG and provides ammunition and grenades, have the combat medic that can run an SMG or maybe even restrict to secondaries with buffs to health/speed and grenade counts.

I believe wholeheartedly in open weapons, but in that provided example I would be okay with such a compromise, where the agency is there to specialize in the role wanting to be played, thus having a fitting weapon for that purpose.

Just from experience I will never agree that the weapon makes the class, but I can absolutely agree that some weapons have no place with a class(sniper and lmg Medics).

An engineer that is competent will 90% of the time be repairing, an old Infiltrator Recon before the assault-swap with the beacon would be slinking in with a CQC weapon to find an alternative strikepoint, and Medics ideally would largely be reviving and healing, not pushing and killing, making any decent range weapon suitable for them just in case(a pistol making the most sense thematically though).

I am coming around to the idea of assault having that beacon though. While it does empower recon Sniper Bros. by taking away infiltration as a valid strategy, it does mean that a mostly useless Vanguard class can truly shine as one, pushing the Frontline, putting down the beacon to bolster that Frontline, and keeping the pressure on.

To me its not just the weapons or the gadgets that makes the class, its the weapons AND the gadgets that make the class. They're two sides of the same coin. The interplay between having various weapons and gadgets split across classes is what provides that BF balance and 'feel', and having fully open weapons dilutes that. I think Dice are giving themselves less tools to balance the game by having fully open weapons.

I do think the best middle ground is the semi-open weapons formula that BF4 had and BF6 tries to replicate in its closed-weapon playlist, I just don't think they've balanced it right. They've not balanced classes right at all and should probably have spent more time on it, they're obviously not that confident with it having changed the spawn beacon to assault so close to launch. I am interested to see how that plays though, I think it could work well like it does in games like HLL.

They did, and I was irritated by it too, but I think I can get behind the logic: Assault is the Vanguard and right now is rather pointless. By giving them the beacon, it enables them to truly be the Vanguard, pushing the Frontline and establishing it, pushing it up further and further.

Problem is that it empowers Sniper Bro Recons and ruins the infiltrator playstyle.

The weapon balance in 2042 was always garbage, smgs can be used in way longer range than they should be able to. In BF5 and earlier games each class and weapons they had served a better purpose. Medic in BF5 could use Jungle Carbine for example to play at longer ranges but not a full on sniper like a Kar98 which still encourages a mix of play styles

I reckon the suits are probably more in favour of open weapons as it leads to greater sales of weapon skins, but I get your point. Less suit involvement and more game designer input is best for the player but not for the suits pockets
