With the basic coop/barn you can only take hay out of the hopper if there is a empty feeding spot. So like the basic coop has 4 feeding spots, if all 4 are full it won't let you remove hay but WILL if at least one of the spots are empty

I'm not sure if it's the same with the middle stage, but you can always remove hay once they're fully upgraded

Standard Farm is the move. Huge open area, easy to set up sprinklers early, and you're not fighting weird terrain while trying to grind gold for Joja bundles. If you want a bit of flavor, Meadowlands gives you a free chicken to start which speeds up animal product income.
