You can’t necessarily play the game wrong, everyone makes mistakes and has different play styles, if it’s your first playthrough progression will of course feel slower as you’re figuring everything out, the training rod may help familiarize you with the mechanics of the fishing mini game and make the fish easier to catch/escape less

Nothing I said there includes a mod, I play on laptop, you can get the training rod form Willy at his shop, it makes fishing easier but you can only get basic fish, it’s good for starting out gaining fishing xp for the first few levels

you can just try your best with the items you have, but it's also fine if you don't win this, by winning you start out with some tokens to spend at the fair, if not you can spend some gold to play some minigames to earn some tokens there as well (it's to redeem prizes at the fair)

just bring 9 items based on the formula and hope for the best, and then you can gamble your tokens on green (always bet 1/3 to 1/2 max) at the wheel and you'd be able to get enough to spend

I was curious, so I checked the wiki and it says gem berries get you 83 gold per day, vs ancient fruit for 57 per day. But that's without processing into artisan goods, so I guess they'd be good if you wanted something low maintenance.
