when you have a silo built, scything grass can add hay to your silo.. as for growing grass, pierre sells grass starters, you can place a solid object like lightning rod or fence ontop so that grass can spread and not get entirely eaten by your animals. if the gates are open, your animals will head out to eat grass and not consume hay, except for raining/winter days where they will stay in doors, in which will consume hay
