Its as big as most other farms, in the beginning you'll have to walk through the middle, once your tools get upgraded you can pass through the barriers. Id say it doesnt take noticeably longer to get around on it

If struggling with fishing you can buy the training rod. This gives you a green catching bar thst is the equivalent of lvl 5.

At level 5 buy thr vest fishing rod you can and use deluxe bait.

Or you vs. Save t8oo level 6 fishing and get the iridium rod. When you can add deluxe bait and a trap bobber.

There are foods you can eat that increase your fishing level temporarily. Things like dish of the sea and seafoam pudding. I want to say trout soup does as well but I cant recall.

As your fishing level increases the green bar gets bigger.

At lvl 3 fishing you can craft and buy crab pots. These will also give fishing xp.

Fish ponds also give fishing xp
