No, there are no game rules, that's just how it is.. takes too long to cultivate, and isn't processed as an artisan good, if it was intended as a cash crop like others are, then you should be able to buy en masse and able to process it

When you start SMAPI it will give you a list of mods you can update with links to the respective mod page

and you can go on your nexus account to find your download history, it will list every mod you have downloaded in the past so it would be easy to get the updated version
