Alright, on Steam it's generally pretty simple to do (if you're using GOG or HB I'm unaware of the process there however, sorry). There's a few options depending on what you want, and you don't need to personally know the person necessarily.
On Steam:

1. You can share an invite code with anyone, including non-friends, for them to join with in-game through the co-op menu. Generally this code changes every time so no player can rejoin a new session with the same code
2. You can allow your friends list to join you in the file settings when you're in-game
3. You can right-click -> Invite to Game any player in your steam friends list
4. If you were on the same network, they could join through a LAN game

Just note that you need at least as many extra cabins as you want players, and (this is going into territory I'm not 100% confident in, so don't quote me) as far as I'm aware once a player joins, their cabin is permanently assigned to them and may not be used by any other player (unless the cabin is demolished)
