You do need the starting hay, because if it rains the chickens won’t go outside so they won’t eat the grass and when they’re not fed they don’t lay eggs so no money lol

The biggest upside of stardew is that there's no time limits. You don't have to optimize everything or have anything planned, you can just walk around blindly and do things at your own pace
