i would upgrade your axe or pickaxe first, then work toward a coop/barn. i always do a cycle of tools and seeds/saplings, building, house upgrade, and then back again but that's just me

you should be able to use your scythe on the grass (you get hay if you have a silo) and then use your hoe on the free area if it's tillable

some spots aren't tillable though
