they shouldn't be dead, but if you get a notification/pop-up that something is stopping the growth of the tree, something is too close to the sapling

Trees require one tile of space in every direction in order to grow. Normal trees can share a tile, but fruit saplings cannot.
Once fully grown, you are able to place anything next to them. Only non-sapling trees can have paths placed nearby while growing.

eh, use the training rod til you get crab pots unlocked, then use crab pots to raise your fishing level to 10

by then your fishing bar is much larger so it becomes much easier

When you get better rods that have bobbers, the Trap Bobber is a solid one

each time you collect from the crab pot, it's counted as catching a fish, so it's a very solid way to grind xp while avoiding the mini-game

perfect catches would net you more mind you, but that requires doing the fishing mini-game

Instead of going through all the floors try resetting for example floor 11 (elevator to f10 and then go down the ladder) and if you don't see anything go out and then back

Going down to floor 20 would be worth it honestly

As floor 21 is a much better to reset than 11
