For early game, fishing the name of the game, but you should still definitely be farming crops on the side.
In addition to that, make sure you get some farm animals on land. Either chickens or Cows.
When you're in Spring Y1, you're not gonna really gonna expect much profit from farming, but Summer and Fall are where the farming pops off.
In Summer, you've got both melons, Hops, blueberries and Starfruit. Although, Starfruit should be expected to be farmed later on in the game since they're expensive.
While in Fall, you've got cranberries and Pumpkins.

For Kegs, it's preferable to use only fruits (preferably expensive ones), Hops, Wheat, or Coffee Beans.
Coffee Beans produce Coffee. Not very profitable, but useful for speed.
Hops produce Pale Ale, which is incredibly profitable.
While fruits produce wine, which is also incredibly profitable, but has a long wait time.

For Preserve Jars, you'd ought to only use vegetables or fish roe in these.
Vegetables get a multiplier than fruits in preserve jars, while the same is the opposite for kegs.

For Dehydrators, you'd ought to only use fruits that can produce multiple per harvest i.e cranberries or mushrooms.

I choose fruit bats over mushrooms because:
-botanist makes iridium fruit gifting much easier than waiting 4 whole years for iridium fruit trees (3 villagers also have loved gifts for specific fruit. 4 if you include wild plums for Jas' plum pudding. Everyone else likes them)
-makes CC/shipping easier
-eat fruits for energy early game (same could be said for mushrooms, I just like fruit more since every single type could be eaten)
-small storage space for late game. I usually put my ||coffee pots|| in here
-mushroom logs make fruit bats even more appealing since you already have another source to get mushrooms easier. Just because mushroom cave comes with a free dehydrator, still doesn’t make it worth it for me personally, but I also just grow crops for kegs so a free dehydrator could be useful early game if you wanted to grow multiples crops
-dont need to check it as frequently as the mushroom cave so it makes it more flexible for me to spend my time doing other things
-bats are cute & I love them
