I can't remember. I think I got it after maybe a year, maybe a few months more. Pay no attention to my "Join Date", because I left the server twice in the last 4 years, once for about six months and once for about 10. When you rejoin, you keep your levels and XP, but get a new join date marked from when you rejoin.

No, but it will stay. A good strategy is to plant tufts of grass starters on the last day or so of Winter. Keep lots of space between the tufts. On the first day of Spring, the grass practically explodes in growth, and those relatively few, widely-separated grass starters can fill your entire map with grass.

I tend to scythe all of my grass away on the last days of Fall for the hay.

Not exactly, you miss out on money using the training rod. It's mainly there if you have trouble fishing early on, and dows help level you faster if you can consistently get perfect catches
