They aren't good for killing enemies, but with explosive ammo can be used to quickly break rocks.

In the early game, fishing is usually the method people go with. In spring the Lake (east of Robin's house) is the best place on Sunny days. The river (either in town or south of Marnie's house) is best during rain... Though that's assuming you're good enough to catch catfish.

Other than that, selling gems you get from mining gets an okay amount of money early. As you level up farming you'll unlock Machines that can be used to make crops worth more as well, like the Preserve Jar which turns Fruits/Veg into Jelly/Pickles that sell for more.

Money gain in this game is pretty exponential. It will feel slow at first, outside of the burst of profit you'll get from Fishing. But as you get more money, thus more seeds and machines to process the crops/animal products you'll get, you'll make more.

It falls off eventually, with Crops -> Artisan goods being a lot better once you have the means for it.

But in the early game, when you don't have the money/machines to facilitate large fields of crops, Fishing is good since it requires (nearly) no cost. THe money value of fish early game holds up.

Miner is better for making money, geologist is better for the museum. Both have good qualities to them

Geologist is also good for gift giving, and can also make money. I usually go for geologist

You get used to it after a while, it takes some practice. It will also become a lot easier once you get later in the game
