Good healing food, Cheese is popular, purple mushrooms, Salad
Focus less on fighting, and just avoid enemies when possible. Serpents will occasionally need to be swatted obviously, but there really isn't much benefit to standing there fighting purple slimes or mummies.
Deeper quicker>Random iridium node in the corner. Use bombs to blow up large collections of rocks to get ladders or shafts. Stop going for random iridium nodes until you're later into the day. Get deeper first.
Most importantly PAUSE OFTEN. Stop trying to panic scroll to your food/bombs, pause the game, move your food or select it so that when you un-pause you can instantly eat it to heal. Pause to see how the floor looks a bit first. (unless you're playing multiplayer, in which case, lmao die)||

for absolute maximum profit the answer is use preserves jar, IIRC.
IIRC potato value is 60g sale value per potato, so 2.25x multiplier from keg = 135g, while x2 +50 from jar is 170g.
Do be aware that kegging potato has the opportunity cost of not kegging something else. Because potato is quite low value and doesn't gain much from being kegged. Usually I sell it straight because I don't use many preserves jar.

life elixir is a terrible reason to pick mushrooms, they're not relevant
nobody I know actually uses life elixir to heal (though maybe this has changed in 1.6, I'm not familiar) because you just don't get enough of them in bulk. We use salad and gold cheese usually because those are easy to get.

I always believed that mushrooms make a significant early game difference because you can just sell them for a bunch of cash early on. Other people will tell you that fruits are significant early on because they let you rush the greenhouse bundle without buying fruit trees and cushion against not having greenhouse before winter. Neither of us is really wrong, it's about which advantage you value more.

if you don't know anything, then fruit bats help you get greenhouse. If you know somewhere between a little and a lot, then selling mushrooms makes a pretty sizeable amount of money. If you know an absurd amount, then the time spent checking the mushroom cave every other day is wasted and it's better to go fruits to let the cave pile up.
