You have to make sure you're fishing in the right place for the season and weather. Upgrading the rod helps with the bite rate but it isn't critical, you can go for a long time on just the bamboo rod you get from willy

My general rule is if an NPC is within a half-screen of my character (using the default zoom setting) then I will go out of my way to talk to them

You do not have to talk to them everyday

what do I get from talking to them?

Everytime you speak to an NPC, they gain a small amount of friendship with you

Every day that you don't talk to an NPC, they lose a very small amount of friendship

The math works out that if you talk to them once every 5 days, you break even

But in the end, giving gifts is by far the best way to raise friendship

And will dwarf any expected gains from just talking to them regularly

If you mean the hoed spots, you can preserve them by leaving crops on them to die (so a regrowing crop you were using like blueberries work, or a cheap one like Parsnips)

Just crops will die, animals are pretty much forever I’d say

animals hide inside during winter and crops die

so no stuff like truffle from pigs
