Parsnips aren't very good but in this case they serve as sacrificial bait...

Every 16th crop growing on your farm attracts a crow.
You can't build scarecrows until you reach Farming Lv1.
Each crow checks a few random tiles on your farm overnight. If the tile contains a crop and isn't in range of a scarecrow, it eats the plant.

They don't need to wait for the crop to be ripe or anything, they can eat a newly sprouted stalk

the best way to get helpful early game recipes is to talk to the villagers and gain friendship points with them. their mailed gifts can be super helpful early game.

i personally focus on planting the needed crops for the Community Center year 1, especially the base quality crops. higher quality is easier to obtain later on.

don't be afraid of mining! it's such an easy way to get coal and stone for crafting.

and with 1.6, the help quests posted by Pierre's shop give such good rewards and are easier to obtain (most of the time) for 1.6 || prizes include Prize Tickets which you can redeem at Lewis's house ||

For a medium-high Farming skill level,
Using basic Fertilizer,
And selling the harvest raw,

Cranberries and Pumpkins generate exactly the same profit per tile, down to the cent.

The problem then becomes: Pumpkin seeds only cost 100G but Cranberry seeds cost 240. So you can just plant way more Pumpkins.
