Oh for sure! The wonderful thing about SDV is that there is no rush to do anything and you can play however you like. Play in a way that is fun for you and figure the game out as you go. :)

Having a notepad is helpful if you're like me and like to plan ahead. You don't have to be a planner if you play this game but I like to plan my in-game days to maximize opportunity for profit

Fishing Skill levels increase it, including temporary ones from food
The Cork Bobber increases it while equipped
In v1.6, ||Deluxe Bait increases it while equipped||

Fishing Skill level can exceed 10 via food, and the bar does grow bigger accordingly

If your fishing skill level is below 5, you can buy the ultra-cheap Training Rod from Willy. This will set your fishing bar to the size of a Lv5 fishing bar at minimum

It can't use bait, though, so I'd still recommend going for the Fiberglass Pole. Bait cuts the time it takes for a bite, and time doesn't pass during the minigame, so that means more fish per day
