Seems to be the most common gripe for new players I find. I personally love the fishing though. I think it's just a matter of practice though, I hated it for my first week of playing. Training rod helps with the bigger bar for early leveling and once you have higher levels, you have a bigger bar by default.

The thing to know is that you are not just raising the fishing bar when you press the button.
You are accelerating it upwards.

You don't want to hold the button, or it will gain too much upward speed.
You don't want to rapidly tap the button, or it will gain too little upward speed.
You need to learn how to properly press and release it to manage its speed and position.
You'll be sort of pulsing the button, not mashing it.

Training rod is really good. You get the fishing bar of a level 5, which allows for more consistent perfect catches (if the fish remains in the fishing bar the entire time, xp is multiplied by x2.4), and you're less likely to get trash.

I rush fiberglass rod as soon as I hit 1800 gold, which is sold at Willie's. Then you can attach bait to it to make the fish bite twice as fast.

The other option to add onto the previous part about the training rod is you can also choose to passively level fishing through crab pot fishing after level 3 fishing (it is slow though). Although you may eventually have to fish, you can at least get to max level with the largest fishing bar to assist you + access to tackle.

Id reccommend getting the fiberglass rod when its available. The rod you start out with kinda sucks and its hard to catch stuff. Fiberglass rod has a bigger catch bar and increases fish quality you catch. After getting the fiberglass pole fishing has become one of my fav things to do passtime

It depends on who you talk to. I try to get things done efficiently and reliably, and hope to write a steam guide about it some day. My most consistent strat is a day 4 backpack upgrade based on a min/max guide I found, though I haven't put it up yet.
