When specifically farming for ores, it's best to just reset the floor instead of mining for ladders to get deeper.

So if you want Iron for example, just start on floor 40, check floor 41, mine all the iron you see... If you get a ladder, great take it. If you don't get a ladder, go back up to reset the mines, and check floor 41 again (Note: In multiplayer, you have to actually wait for the time to tick a 10 minute interval for the mines to reset, in single player simply going to floor 0 is enough)
