If you have space on your farm to do so, just plant grass and let it spread (so keep the animals away so they don't eat it) and scythe it every so often to get Hay.

If you keep your animals fenced in, consider destroying, and then replacing the fences, but putting grass under where you place them first. Animals can't eat grass under objects, but it can still spread from it, making a kind of feeder scenario where a few grass appears daily for them to eat.

Lastly... Just suck it up and buy it from Marnie. Animals are still profitable if you buy hay.

If you process the animal products, it should make a good amount still.
hay costs 50g and feeds 1 animal for a day.
Chickens make 1 egg a day (50g). Turned into mayo it's worth 190g (140g profit).
Cows make 1 milk a day (125g). turned into cheese it's worth 230g (180g profit).

I think it's mainly just personal preference. You can always try to get another diamond. Normally it sells for 750g, so the request gives 3x it's value. Plus 150 friendship points (almost double the value of a loved gift).
