First spring I usually do :
plant the 15 parsnips, buy potatoes with the rest of my gold and then work planting and watering, clearing out my farm until exhausted and then go around talking to villagers.
Then more farm clearing and repeat this until your crops begin to grow, rinse and repeat. The first time your crops grow, sell some but keep a few potatoes for energy ||and buy at least one of each crop for the greenhouse/community center||.
