Wheat is good for summer-fall, you can plant it so it's ready on the 1st of fall and scythe it all then replant what you want for fall seeds, just have to give it the buffer days to grow. Or you could keep any summer plants that will die and they should keep it watered.

Dust sprites with a burglars ring is the best method I've found. Once you have a decent amount of income, buying coal from Clint (especially in year 1) though expensive becomes a way to save time if you don't mind spending the money.

In order for it to spread and the animals to not eat it, you'll need to put a fence on each side

Placing some grass starter under the fence posts before placing will mean it always has a source your animals cant eat and it can grow from as long as you don't scythe it yourself. I find myself having to readd grass starter either way though if I have enough animals.
