There isn’t really a set progression exactly.. you could focus on the Community Center goals which will unlock more things as you complete bundles

Oh. As far as I know, there aren't really that kind of quests in the game. There's the 'order board' on Pierre's shop, there will be another two boards later in the game, sometimes you'll get a letter, or an NPC will visit you first thing in the morning.

Only things that could be any usefull are geodes early game and maybe coal

In all the years playing I only had one train that dropped so much that I thought 'yeah, this is worth it'... That one dropped a whole load of geodes/coal early in the game, and I was already in the area planting trees. But otherwise, nah. Do note that you can collect dropped items the whole day, you don't need to be there while the train is passing.
