Bombs and stairs, fighting is just a distraction when the goal is to get down as far as possible. Skip large floors, use bombs to clear large areas of boulders. Have a good pickaxe, lots of food, and buy the lava sword from the adventurers guild before going in.

if you're just starting out, it's easier to grind preserves jars unless you're already tapping oak trees

i personally grinded coal for preserves jars and got a full shed by winter 1
