Lightning rods don't have a range. They simply need to exist on your farm. Every time lighting happens the game checks "Do rod exist?" If yes, it tries to strike it... If the rod is empty it successfully strikes. If rod is charging, it hits a random tile instead.

I typically only find 2 or 3 crops destroyed by lightning, so I'd put out like 4 lightning rods

You get more lightning on Lucky Days. I usually have around 15-20 rods placed on my farms. Rarely do they all get struck, but having more than you need decreases the chance of crops getting struck.

That 50% increase is multiplicative, not additive, so it means that the 2% chance of a critical you get on most weapons becomes a whopping 3%.
