There's really nothing you can do wrong that will break your game. There are no hard time limits, just seasonal ones sometimes. If you miss anything, it will always come around again later, or next year at the same time.

Early on in the game I just go to floor 10 of the mines, digging up the ground can get you cave carrots — almost always can get more than what it costs when you use one, so just keep digging that floor and resetting until I’ve got a stash of cave carrots —
