It's a good idea to only clear the areas you need for crops, animals, and buildings, while letting rest grow wild with grass and trees for a steady supply of hay and wood. Empty ground, while it may look neat and orderly, actually gives you nothing.
Of course you'll want to clear weeds and debris as these can be destructive. And chop trees for wood if you need, but leave one here and there to drop seeds to grow more trees. Same with grass; leave tufts scattered here and there and it will grow back and fill in, and you can have several hay harvests per year.
You can buy a silo from Robin.
