You don't have to go through all that. If you want to draw hay from the hopper in a Deluxe barn or coop, simply use a cherry bomb on the feeding trough (making sure no heaters or equipment are in the way) and clear a few slots. Then you can empty the silos through the hay hopper

I just stick a cherry bomb in the far corner away from my heater and ||autopetter|| for the easiest way. Just make sure to refil the empty slots with hay when you're done emptying the silos or that number of animals won't get fed that night.

The best day to forage is on Saturdays. All the forageables accumulate throughout the week and are at a peak on Saturdays before resetting on Sundays.
Also, if you check the Wiki page for each season (linked on the Main page as Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter), you can find charts on eash season's page that will tell you the odds of finding each kind of forageable in any given region.
