"a way down appeared" usually means by the ladder you came down. When you killed everything but no ladder has appeared, that means a bat (or some other flying mob) is hiding off screen, best way to try to trigger it is to walk the perimeter

He's also a solo dev, originally developed stardew in monocdk I believe which is straight code (like, not using an engine like most devs do) and has (relatively) recently transfered it over to an engine just for ease.
