You do need to put a fish in there. Most fish will work with only a few exceptions ||(legendary fishes)||. They will populate afterward on their own, and the fish will periodically ask for an item to up the cap of fish in the pond until it reaches ten fish. The fish can begin producing roe pretty quickly, though.

Clearing out the weeds, fallen logs, stones and tall grass on your farm to make room for crops is a good first move.

Felling trees is also a good idea since you will need a substantial amount of wood. Just make sure to do your best to chop down different trees so you can get the items you need for field snacks which are good for food starting out.

You will drain your energy very quickly chopping down trees.

Once you run out of energy you can use your scythe and focus on weeds. You can get mixed seeds from weeds and plant them for random crops that will help on your journey. 😛
