If you're letting your animals eat grass, and you really should, you'll just have to accept the fact that you'll have to keep replenishing grass with grass starters, even when putting fences atop it. It's just part of raising animals.

Even with a large enough area. I had larger area for my last farm where I had animals (can't post it here due to visible spoilers) and I would still have to plant grass starters once or twice a month.
My year one strategy is to not bother with fences and put the barn and coop at the edge of the wild grass. I only clear the areas I need for crops and buildings and let the rest of the farm go wild with trees and grass for the wood and hay.
