There just comes a point where you are bringing back hundreds of ores on your runs to wherever and you just won't every be able to farm or find enough coal. You just can't.
Once you reach this point, you'll need to bite the bullet and just buy it from Clint. Or, as FG said, buy wood from Robin in year 1 and run it through a charcoal kiln. But usually the really ore-heavy runs are later than year 1.
