You just have to live with the risk early game until you can make lightning rods. Storms may destroy a few crops, but they won't wipe you out, so don't worry about it.

Farming and fishing are fine. Foraging: You need 6 for lightning rods. I doubt you get that before the first storm. Focus on the sprinklers and accept that you might loose a plant or two (ironically if it's a good day).

When you have more sprinklers than you need for your plants: plant summerseeds (if you have 7+ days left in summer). Those give foraging xp.

Yes. A good way to do that efficiently is to forage on Saturdays. All the forageables that have spawned in over the week will accumulate and reach a peak on Saturdays, before the maps reset on Sundays.
Supplement that by chopping trees for wood.

Here's the thing: Yes, later on you'll favor iridium sprinklers. But it's not like quality sprinklers stop working overnight.

You can still do extra fields with them for as long as you're low on cash.

It's a non-issue for now. Later when you want to switch to iridium sprinklers, you'll probably do so with a complete farm remodeling over Winter.
