It is nice for money early. But it's not the only thing. Work on relationships and get those cutscenes while just foraging and tending crops a while. Crops will become your best source of money before you know it anyways.

Miner and Prospector is still the way to go early. Not worth switching to gemologist for. You'd need 500 topaz just to break even on the switching cost. It's far from good money, but it's probably best to sell them early instead of hoarding them like I do for no reason, even without gemologist.
