Never underestimate watering can upgrades. A fully upgrade can waters a 6x3 area at once, an enchanted one waters a 5x5 area. Watering crops even outside the sprinkler-enabled area takes no time when your can is fully upgraded.

If you want to expand your farming area into the sand, you will want to invest into Retaining Soil. Late game you will get access to Deluxe Retaining Soil, which keeps your crops watered all season, so watering is really not a concern at the point when you can be making mega crops anyway. You can even forego sprinklers altogether at that point to get more crop space.

The map is also deceptively huge. If you absolutely can't live without sprinklers, there is enough space to put a dozen barns and/or fish ponds too, for other alternatives to farming crops. - i hope that helps!
