If I may interject this, although i'm late to the discussion, you don't have to scatter them around. As long as they are on your farm they have a chance of being struck. In addition to this there is always a chance a tree or crop will be struck but its less if you have lightning rods to be struck instead. I can't speak for when the lightning rods are full, however.

Better question for me is... chest shed? I know some people do it but there really is no point to it, you can put chests in your house or around it or is places crops wouldent be able to grow or put otherthinfs or build it around those things and they would still be closer and organizable
