When playing an old save, new update items will feel less good than what they are. You already have everything, so stuff that help mid or late game have no use for your very late game save. I would recommend to start a new farm.

Extreme late game theory craft is pretty different now, because mushroom logs and mystic trees have really high gold-per-second.

For early game, rushing fishing is even better than before now because legendary fish ponds are really strong relative to the minimal investment investment required.

If you rush desert access fast enough, you can actually visit Skull Cavern during the Desert Festival without having cleared the mines yet, plus have access to the Chef for free, really strong buffs while you're doing it

Oh, and fish smokers are really good

Especially if you play Riverland farm, which gets one for free

My headcannon is, since he only mentions it during the skull cavern event, this is a test of will, to prove yourself it is possible, that you only need to hold on to succeed
Using too many stairs is basically bypassing this whole idea, hence why in this case he would abhorre it

(little side note, but I'm writing a sdv fic where I dive deep into the "Mr Qi is a god-like, eldritch creature" among other things, and I explain that headcannon)
