The trees in their radius makes spawn different type of shrooms. Best result are oak and mystic trees tome.
If there is moss on the trees, shroom quality gets better.

Every 4 days they make mushrooms
They can give different amounts, quality and type of mushroom
You can affect them with things like moss on trees, amount of trees and type of trees

I often dehydrate them. If they are iridium, I sell them to prioritize something else. The moss quality boost does not help that much.

Long term content is pretty smart to me. Most players do not use multiplayer, like most players do not use animation cancel. Getting desert festival Y1 is not intended, even if possible if you try hard. Balancing the game around minmaxers/multiplayers/speedrunners is not fun and does not content most people.

I have read someone complaining you did not start with an operational greenhouse in vanilla(they used to play modded and had one). I have seen people complaining the SC had no elevator like regular mines and it was too hard. If you listened to all people complains, you would have no sense of progression, no reward for having accomplished anything and the game would be flat way less enjoyable. Time needs to flow, you make slow progress one baby step after the other, efforts must be made and that is fine. This is what makes the game fun.

First year of a run is the most fun I have in every run I did, because this is where I have to make choices and adapt to what I got. It is way less fun when I have a stack of cheese, a stack of staircases, no need to manage my energy, have teleporters all around the place that allow me to do anything any day, weapons that destroy everything.
