this should be applied worldwide
I had a late night one a little while ago
A lot of people would be overweight then.
how angry are people
Yes.
Bea you have no idea
I sometimes spend an entire day in what can charitably be described as a snit
Bea is a being of not many knowlege
everyone should pack an emergency sultana
like im angry sometimes but, it wears off at the end yknow
Especially if five years were spent in hell
I had to throw my emergency sultanas away because they expired :(
And during family law I was ALWAYS angry
damn
I'll get new ones when I get back
My emergency erwtensoep is well within the date at least
quill i know u meant something else but know i am imagning u getting new family
i should, head to bed
Eepy time for bea
For me too actually
I need to pack tomorrow
0:30
Goodnight to all of you.
And I need to go get an extra bike lock to chain my bike to the backyard bike cover thingy since my neighbours never remember to lock the yard. I want my bike to still be there when I get home.
oh right I have work tomorrow
Goodnight!
... No holidays yet?
Oh no
So do I!
Godspeed, crumb
I do have the time between christmas and new year off
also the friday after new year
it's ok. From experience these days are always super chill
almost no one is around and no one expects anything to get done
people don't even want things to get done because that means they have to deal with that just before christmas
I interned around this time once and I had to explain to an associate that my family actually celebrates Christmas and I won't be working that day
"But are you actually celebrating it or just using it as an excuse to sleep in"
Me, internally: "Do you want me to go to midnight mass and take a selfie to prove that we do more than sleep????"
wtf
I don't remember what happened to her
Can go kick the coal Santa sent her for all I care
my current employer does not allow you to work between christmas and new year. They are mandated days off
Most of India doesn't actually celebrate Christmas, so
oh this was in india not interning here
She didn't realize from my name that I probably would be celebrating
I never interned here and now I'm suffering because that's the best way to get a job
rough
internships don't really exist for software development jobs here I don't think
If your company needs a privacy officer... I'm available starting second week of January
They absolutely do, and y'all get paid better, even
The Boi is interning rn at a large company
He's being paid 500 a month for four days a week, the software interns get twice that iirc
too used to the word internship being prefixed with unpaid
Most of mine were unpaid but Indian law firms REALLY like paying with experience, the skinflints
I suppose I had a kind of internship. The utrecht uni's software dev bachelor's finishes with a 6 month uni arranged team project thing where they set you up with a real client and you have to build something for them within those 6 months
He did learn a lot, and has better connections now, at least
That's a university project, yeah
That's not the same
It's instead of a thesis, right?
it is
Ye
it's been like 6 years I think the starter salaries have gone up
Night night
<flashbacks to the thing I saw where you essentially pay to be an intertn>
(I know you're not in the US, but it still gave me flashbacks)
That's a lot of words to say "yeah this basically is an internship that you pay for"
Also, it's not for them, it's basically an agency
I haven't been able to find out if they are also charging the companies
And no it isn't a small amount
12 weeks, 10 hour a week minimum
In case you were wondering, yes, of course it's game dev, who else could be exploited as easily
technically in their explanation they never dispute that it is different from an internship you have to pay for
Yeah it's just funny that they basically say "yeah we know that's what you're thinking, and we aren't even going to deny it"
sure love being forced to pay for things before you are allowed to do anything that earns you money
Even better. Before you do anything that will kinda partially help you maybe earn money one day in the future
also called the education system
Isn't that college
yes
Having to pay to work at a company 😍

ah, the joy of "passion" careers
m y college requires a set number of internship hours
most of these interrnships are unpaid if you can find them
I'm sorry I beg your pardon?? How much have yous been talking XD
a bit
🙏
Nine. Nine. Six
are you okay
That's all?
It's the most I've ever seen for sure XD
And atra I have no idea what 996 is supposed to mean
(I'm okay!)
I know I've seen double that before, at least back before we got this channel
Possibly before the #making-mods-general and #making-mods-art split
That would be my dad, who can fall asleep in like less than a minute.
I'm not jealous, nooo, not at all.
we joke that my dad is asleep before his head hits the pillow
Sleep is good
Coffee is awesome
Maybe I should run another marathon
I don't even need to joke about my dad, I've witnessed him fall asleep while waiting in line once
He wasn't even sleep-walking, just perfectly balanced for a nap on his feet
Complete with snoring
I should study his brain under a microscope
used to hang out with a guy with some kind of sleep disorder. Definitely wasn't a positive thing but he'd sometimes just fall asleep in the middle of a conversation and then be gone for a few minutes at most and then he'd be awake again with no idea that he was ever asleep
My dad is just easily bored and presumably mastered standing sleeping out of boredom in his youth
He's like a cryptid sometimes /affectionate
😨
Fwiw when I close my eyes in a long run and settle in I'm not actually asleep....
this is a dad superpower
mine does it too
Don’t you have to check where the trees are??
Open your eyes every now and then to make sure you're not going off trail tbh
This is interesting
Number 15,732 will shock you!
I mean part of it is the difference between American and Asian work culture tbh
my mum used to be able to do that!
for a moment I thought I saw @safe dragon in modded farmers and got very confused
don't worry I've never sent a message there in my entire life
I only have 2 messages in #stardew-valley let alone modded
and one of those was trying to divert a bad conversation as a moderator
how long until those messages are old enough to have their own discord accounts
my oldest messages will be turning 10 in a month
so 3 more years
the #stardew-valley messages are only 5.5 years old
so a long time to go
to be fair, the channel is also only 5.5 years old
You were a moderator
twice yes
I knew that one!
back in 2016 and then another time in 2020
there are a few random ex moderators floating around
the other one is “should I save up for strawberry seeds in year 1”
yeah to divert a bad conversation
my discord account did turn 10 recently
oh wait no
that was a different channel
that one was just a meme
a few sentences later
I know I once posted a random question in a stardew channel just to get people to stop talking about politics or something
in the past I have successfully diverted a bad conversation by asking modded farmers if they could swap any two npcs’ hair who would it be and why. junis take notes
(/lh)
update your oldest message?
did you know you have the fifth oldest surviving quote in the server
oh no
.q 6
I feel like im witnessing murder, poor seb
- Crumbledore
wow it's stardew valley related
dw by surviving I mean post quote purge
I remember when they had to do a big purge cause in the feeblebeeble/aihr era people were quoting every time someone used the word fart
.q 1
No quote found. Wow, chat more, losers.
.q 2
I LOVE ABBY FITE ME

- Crumbledore
yup
I didn't even have any modding rights
couldn't delete messages
couldn't kick
lewis hadn't set it up right yet
damn seeing the names of all the people with early quotes
I remember all of them
other than 2016 idk who that is smh
.q 6480
@modest jewel Check out the project populate pack for more crops, artisan goods, and recipes
- @severe badge (Jump)
thanks 6480
those early quotes really show what a strange place this was back then
.q 158
its that time of day where i lose all sense of what the fuck is happening in this chat
- notoatmeal
We went through the quotes list and deleted hundreds from the early days that were simply too NSFW or fucked up now
so the ones that remain are very mild
-# sorry about that again lmao
I was expecting you guys to just delete everything pre a certain date!
there's still some very questionable stuff in there
I'm not sorry btw
hope you had fun
Even 2020 was a totally different vibe with lots of very out there quotes so deleting everything pre that would be awful
it’s good enough now
I've got some nice quotes
if I say so myself
also really bad ones
please delete those
I seem to have dozens
I considered letting uber find a random quote from you and decided against it because of that
I'm not proud of some of these what an immature child
I did figure tbh, they are pretty old haha

did someone say KAR?
(wow I missed the quote party, AND a transient channel name. sad)
Unfortunately my newest non-informational quote (ie. pre-custom-commands, but also why was "Right now magic has a level cap of 50 and no professions" quoted) is from mid 2021 despite being here much longer

damn you're famous
I used to be the one known for an absurd frequency of making mods, not aedenthorn 😔
also cat is now blocking discord

Just continued his grooming
Because for some reason, being on my desk = grooming time
Kirby would stay up here just to chill and hang out with me, but Mozart needs me to watch him groom his rear. Every. Time.
Hi mozart!!!!
wow
Why even bother put ram in it at that point
Well, spent a while figuring out how to change over from an Nvidia GPU to AMD, only to find out post driver uninstallation, the GPU is dud! Should've tested it in another computer before assuming it was drivers XD
the new project is working
dawg. what technological demons r u summoning
mathematical ones I think?
I'm fully simulating a 5-stage pipelined RISC-V processor
and creating an interactive learning tool with a Blazor web server and a Maui desktop app for it
the goal is to replace/supercede RARS, MARS, RARS Nova and Venus in University uArch learning, and offer a richer featureset more in-line with something like SPIKE, but with the academic transparency that RARS and other educational assemblers have
basically, it simulates the processor cycle by cycle, tells you the register values, supports 64 and 32b modes
a few other things
I'm currently building the engine and API
those logs are the results of running a few algorithms on it
for example this is the fibonnaci sequence
this calculates the greatest common denominator of two integers
as someone who's a hater of both blazor and maui I wish u good luck on that part
Blazor seems great, but I'm not handling the web side
it's probably a good choice for what you're doing with it
Maui is moreso as a fallback, in case someone wants a native desktop app, since RARS offers that
but the really big thing was I wanted to mostly use 1 language as much as possible
that said... my friend hit me with one of the worst messages of my life
I've done native maui with the xaml layout instead of Blazor and it was not great at the time... but it was also brand new so I'd like to think that improved
we actually stopped using scss just so we could drop the npm dependency
at my old job
it can be avoided but you'll have to accept living in your .net bubble without Javascript libraries
Tailwinds PostCSS requirement may prove problematic
I'm sure it's possible
yeah
but who wants to write semi-native CSS?
I'm a regular css file enjoyer
I think the engine is the main wow-factor for this project
I'd hope so
the blazor/maui stuff is just a wrapper for the logic framework
I have a tiny little discord bot I've been making recently and the node_modules dir is over 1GB 😭
bruh
that's just how npm is tbh
not in my experience
depends what you need to add
not to brag but my work web app I build has 0 vulnerabilities according to npm
I couldn't believe my eyes
iirc the only dependencies on that bot are discordjs, axios, and cheerio
there's always at least like 25
once has a project with over 200 mild vulnerabilities that just kinda sat there
concurrently is one of the greatest node packages ever made
task automation through npm is just really nice
true
don't use that one
I think I used to use a different package that's very similar to concurrently?
npm-run-all
I'm more amused that your project is stored in your downloads folder
quick clone
not the main repo
too lazy to checkout branches so I just keep several on disk
I'm sure there's a better way to do what I'm doing than cheerio tbh but I don't have the energy to do research rn
so I used the first thing that popped up
wow, whoever wrote this package description seems lowkey insufferable 😭
it says it's industry standard so ur clearly fine
it's okay I just didn't read it /j
it's not a rust project they can't claim to be blazingly fast
oh, guys not to fret
AIRBNB
if airbnb put their stamp on it, it's good enough for me
tbh that does probably mean it's not going to suddenly be abandoned a month from now
tbf don't airbnb do a ton of web dev stuff
yes, but they probably also use dozens of packages across range
its hard to tell much about any given package unless its some dudes you know take it super serious
yeah I wouldn't use it as a badge of quality or anything
all four of the "other sponsors" are casinos
all I know about airbnb is that their website is dogshit on mobile
it somehow completely broke my keyboard when I tried to answer a message
me when I react native
do you ever feel like a tool makes people too lazy or dependant?
React Native
Typescript
Electron
my only web dev experience is raw html+css+js
I'm not gonna lie, the lack of typing (even python like soft typing) in js kinda drove me mad
I can't get autocompletion if my objects can be anything
js object be like Jevil Deltarune
so yeah, I think I'll take typescript
Electron is so ass
Speaking as a reluctant user of a few Electron apps, not from a dev standpoint
airbnb is a weird company from an endorsement of web tech.
they kinda set the industry back 3-5 years due to their eslint config being the defacto for ages and it was kinda shit
I dont mind electron as npm install, npm build npm start pretty much just works, and dont need to deal with any of the madness that is C toolchains
I prefer true web to electron, but will accept it if the usecase truly needs access to api's that aren't implemented in browsers yet
I would ordinarily agree
but then again
electron can be really good, it just often isnt
Discord's use of electron is dogshit, but VSCode does it well 🤷♂️
it's all ass if ram is becoming 6 million dollars per GB
cause electron isn't exactly memory efficient
Yeah my problem with it is the RAM usage, I have 16 gigs of ram in my laptop and I would like for discord to not use half of it
Yeah VSCodium barely uses any resources I've noticed
Very nice
at the end of the day, real memory usage isnt the number you see in Task manager
people scare over having too little ram. That's not the issue for 99.99% of cases, dont worry
I mean, my 8GB ddr3? maybe? laptop definitely doesn’t have enough ram but it also isn’t the only bottleneck
for most of discord I agree electron isn't needed.
but voice calls are better in electron than in web
Oh I see the slowdowns, that's the only reason I grumble
The laptop is quite beefy and handles a lot of things with no trouble, so when it actually starts lagging, it's very visible
how old is your laptop?
yeah thats primarily caching and delivery optimization that comes with more ram. My primary point is that it's not a functional requirement, and clever coding can bypass that need
tell that to my work pc with 16 GB throwing out of memory warnings at me
that OS probably wasn't windows
true
I wish windows would give more info on how much memory is actually used and how much is simply being reserved
and that task manager actually told you what is being used by system processes
For the stardew people here, and sorry if I am disruption/asking again, but for people with some knowledge on programming.
Any feedback on this? https://github.com/DaanSelen/stardew-multiplayer
it's not great when you're sitting at 13GB of memory used and then you check task manager and nothing is using more than like 200 MB
tools exist for that
Rammap and Process explorer being the main ones

I don't use windows anymore it's too late for that info
I mean I use it for work but I'd get assassinated by our security officer for installing that
now you just btop?
yes
many
What am I looking at
a list of available asm instructions on the platform?
(I don't know what those are, I'm the imposter in this channel, remember?
)
your computer doesnt understand complicated instructions that exist as code
it uses a compiler, which converts it into a format the computer can understand
Assembly is a way of representing those instructions and what they do
Assembly instructions are basically the most fundamental representations of how your computer is doing work, without abstracting down to actual binary
Ahhhh
Ty for explaining!
in x86 especially these instructions become very long and strange
you'll get like VDBPSADBW
VDBPSADBW — Double Block Packed Sum-Absolute-Differences (SAD) on Unsigned Bytes
a real avx512 instruction
all so easy to remember
I know this one exists because the PS3 emulator uses it
we love SIMD
(single instruction, multiple data, aka do this action in bulk)
why add two numbers when you can add 4 pairs of numbers at once
ez
and then do that on 4 cores for 16 pairs of numbers at once
stonks
do it on the gpu instead of simd and do 2000 at once
use NVLink to use multiple gpus at once...
it keeps going
go the distributed computing route and make a whole server farm add numbers for u
now we're at the scale of AI data centers
Now we're printing money
the type of quality commit history we want to see
(in all honesty its a shitpost but this is my initial implementation)
Goated
HTTP GET acme.com/api/v1/add/2/2
i suppose the focus here is that different platforms can have different instructions available, or with different names and implementations, hence writing a script to give you a list of what's available.
it's something of a roadblock to cross-platform programming, and one of the big components/considerations of emulating other platforms.
not that ive ever used assembly myself, or have any real interest in it

@devout vault I was told you would appreciate some cat pics, here is my Munchkin
And these are our outdoor ferals, the orange is Shakespeare and the fluffy gray is Hathaway. The Siamese looking one and baby don't have names yet, other than "Shakespeare's wife and child"
this is the game I was talking about in #town-square ! welcome to Grid Garden^^
(Discovered on reddit of course, I don't just browse github)
And don't worry you rustacean heathens, they have you covered
oh good
They'd better rename that to no-as-a-service-rs to avoid incurring the foundation's wrath. /j
Does anyone know of a tiling window manager I can toss ontop of KDE? I did find bismuth but it seems to be archived due to KDE adding tiling in v5.27, but I cannot find any settings for it at all
I thought kde implies u r doing de
I like a mix of both XD
Love the integration between everything and how well it's tossed together, but the manual tiling I'm not a fan of XD
I don't use these things so don't ask me if it's good
Oooo thank you!
I think most of my screen time is some kinda big window (game, vscode, browser arguably) so i never really grasped tiling wm
This is another one I've heard of https://github.com/peterfajdiga/karousel
I have two monitors, my primary one is usually a single big window, but the secondary one I tend to have many things open at once, I did try combinging a tilling window manager and a scrolling one, but crashed when I scrolled slightly too far which was a shame
Chue do you know if there is a tiling browser
KDE is/has added the ability to set different virtual desktops on different monitors, which also might help
chrome allows you to open tabs side by side
I'm always in vim but I like having multiple buffers
does that count
No
I also do 2 monitors but I just manually tile stuff if I need to

I really need to set back my keybinds, this is horribly confusing XD
Hmm yes totally what I want....
perfect
Ahh yes, typical jank, it is fixed by doing literally nothing
This works flawlessly, I would say better suited to me than hyprland XD
so thank you!
Are you using the x11 or Wayland version of KDE?
wayland (pretty sure)
Then yeah this
it does work wonderfully, tiny bit jank with custom tile scaling but meh
Just give in and fully move over to hyprland
I was on hyprland, but I had to reinstall and couldn't be bothered setting up all my configs again (I didn't make a config repo ;_;)
I will probably be going back when I get a working graphics card, at least this will do for mow
Now*
this is a niri channel not a hyprland channel
can u explain the difference to me, corporate
hyprland is a tiling window manager. Niri is a scrolling window manager
hyprland does have extensions to make it scrolling, though I think the one I initially heard about has been abandoned
Just copy some other schmucks dotfiles
“I want all of the attached window manager BS with none of the benefits of having more on my screen neatly”

The resizing that comes from a tiling manager is like 99% of the benefit
Otherwise I’d just make a riced out custom Wayland compositor
every time I might be linux desktop curious I hear conversations like this, and am reminded why I stick with windows
Guys guys guys

DWM saves us from so much suffering. my love
honestly i know snapping and tiling and workspaces and all that are relatively new to windows but it's strange to think that this implementation is windows-specific and not just how Computers are
granted i've only even used workspaces/desktops in the last month or two and they're annoying as much as they are useful
Considering that the Hyprland maintainer and the community are toxic and transphobic, no thanks. I stay with Sway respectively SwayFX.
autodesk maya is an incredibly efficient program with a surprisingly fast workflow. it stole years of my life in mere months.
I didn't realize that was blueberry until I clicked the profile
I almost considered it was a joke about the software matching the person's name, but I wouldn't have assumed atra knew the software's name
compact mode users smh
@prisma flume Any particular goal for learning 3d modelling?
I have profile pictures showing but blueberry's profile picture is not, in fact, a blueberry
damn compact mode has pfps now
That's been their pfp for a long time so I recognize it
you can just barely tell I have my Christmas pfp when it's that small
It's a separate setting that's been available for ages
But it keeps turning itself off for some reason
So it disappears for a while and it takes forever for me to remember to turn it on
oh no, it was just part of my uni course. definitely the worst part
...but also I don't look at profile pictures closely
Oh, so the goal is "not failing".
Have you ever tried to learn blender before? How much faster is it to learn?
i picked it up a year or so ago again to try my hand at modelling hats for dota but there's no resources around online, it's basically a closed club of professionals these days with extremely high standards and mostly sculpted models rather than constructed (and mostly ludicrous unfitting designs with outlandish themes instead of simpler and more generic ones)
i've used blender before for some amateur art installations, it's what i used for the dota stuff instead of maya now I think about it
it's extremely good these days, it's come a long way from the 2010-ish era
Secretly, casey, I do know what a video game is
plenty of resources and tutorials for general use, very accessible and documented, and bests maya by being free and stable enough to work for well over 60 minutes without crashing
Don't tell anyone
your secret is safe with us 🙂↕️
Maya is not a video game
oh but you should've known. the pfp is from perfect blue
Ah, something I've never watched
That said, I basically dont know anything in detail about anything
Also somehow I lost my water bottle
The game Stardew Valley is about a plumber stomping turtles.

The game Minecraft is about the spiritual journey of solving a Rubik's Cube.
The game My Succubus Girlfriend is about... wait, no, that's a government secret.
wasnt talking to you but pop off
New quote added by sinz163 as #6865 (https://discordapp.com/channels/137344473976799233/1215712021207720006/1453195415527620690)
When you have enjoyed the glorious information density of IRC, going back to like 10 messages per screen is unbearable
though I didn't notice that neither of my current discord clients actually had pfp's on anymore and just didn't notice until looking at casey's screenshot
as much as i loathe modern web design having a whole 1~3 elements onscreen at any given time, i also don't want just text
and as little as i want to see all of discords weird profile decorations, i would still like an icon on the names to get some glance value as to who's typing lol
I mean back in the IRC days people didn't constantly change their names nearly as much
inline names also seem a little inconvenient here given how long they can get with @ preferences, mod counts, pronouns, flavour text, mod names, and so on
and server tags, role icons, ..
tbh those are all great reasons to have less of that crap, rather than being a problem with inline names
anyway i only changed my name because i was at the middle of a long mod author off topic about ace attorney in modded-farmers (sorry Zoe hahah)
i like displaying big pfps on discord because then i don't have to see a person's name seven times when they type a bunch of short lines in a row
i'm sure it was still monday somewhere in the world at the time
but that's a formatting choice by discord and isn't inherent to the choice of density
i still have it turned more compact than the default
i do like pfps and role icons but the server tags and font styles and avatar frames are a bit much imo
glad you can disable most of it. very nice
What about gradients
hmmm so-so
Clearly clearly we need to set up a Zephyr instance
mod author legend looks very nice but i don't think much of the animation. also glad you can disable that separately from ui motion
now if only you could disable profile animations separately too
Zephyr (protocol) - Wikipedia https://share.google/eKbxW2ZfXMTdcxsIB
You deserve a gradient, bluebs
Come steal mine
i like purple 🙂↕️ maybe i steal another solid colour sometime

And I could have a dynamic signature as long as I was okay writing bash

“Guys rust is so cool, what if we just use AI to make everything rust”
Actual monkey brain
do they want the one engineer to write a million lines of code or delete a million lines of code?
I could do that, I'll just search for anything that begins with // and delete it. EZ

"but ai isn't smart enough to fight rust's borrow checker" skill issue I'll just have ai mark every type as Copy
I was mildly upset the other day bc there's a function in an internal crate that didn't need to own the arg
And i can't do anything about it
I'm suddenly happy about W10 not getting updates anymore
I saw stuff about this on Reddit semi recently (with everyone clowning on it)
the fuck does any of this mean
also
1 million lines of code per month per engineer?
no one has ever generated technical debt at that speed
you're right
before we know it we're generating 10 million lines of tech debt a month without even needing an engineer
If you can’t handle me at my tech debt-iest, you don’t deserve me at my code crime-iest
there have been so many more since then
Let's change "no one understands this code because it was written 20 years ago" into "no one understands this code because a crazy AI wrote it"
my favorite still remains that trying to close task manager would instead launch another instance of task manager
brilliant behavior
so you had to kill task manager in task manager

How do ppl who use win11 live
previous times I suffix this question with "without <useful linux thing>"
Do u just disable the auto updates
I mean, with some mental health issues, but I dont' think win11 is causing that.
I think, no definite proof on that
also in my experience it mostly does still work fine
I do update cause work pc
though the updates are pushed by IT so I don't actually know if I'm behind

How are you counting that
anyway apparently microsoft released a statement saying they are bot in fact replacing all c and c++ with ai
the server quote list
that's not stopping Galen Hunt
this is his mission
he had to edit his post actually
to say he never intended to mean he’s doing it to all microsoft code (which, idk he was pretty clear lmao)
“average engineer vibe codes 1 million lines of code a month" factoid actualy (sic) just statistical error. average person vibe codes 0 lines a month. GenAI Galen, who lives in cave & vibes 1 trillion lines each day, is an outlier adn should not have been counted”

That's longer right
I live on win11 insider builds and never experienced that bug
either I was lied to on the internet (impossible) or you managed to avoid whatever specific version had that

Insider updates are every week and it's always ahead of whatever shows up in actual releases so there's a chance the bug just never was in the release ring I'm on

didnt really follow Advent of Code this year at all; why are there only 12 days?
ah its just that he only made 12 puzzles it seems. nvm then 😄
yeah
was a short one
and still managed to have my least favorite day he's ever done

windows 11 has so many small stupid problems but ive never ran into any of the big stupid ones
all of windows 11s small stupid problems can be fixed with disabling all telemetry, deleting a bunch of the dogshit features like one drive, and balling from there
All of windows 11's problems can be fixed by installing arch
just petit ediot things like 'pressing back in tabbed windows explorer will go to the previous page of all tabs, not the one you were just in'
and 'usually volume mixer will not realise you have a new device plugged in or a new program open so you just can't do anything with it even though it's emitting sound'
or the wonderful 'opening any game released after 2023 will use the handsfree audio sink on my Bluetooth headphones for input and output at mobile quality instead of my actual audio devices'
Dont worry you'll get all the Linux issues, like
"You broke the launcher"
Have fun running firefox & for two years
Lol
I've used so many
i use double-click the exe
no exe's on Linux
sorry i should've used a more cross-platform term like App
😌
but i am NOT salty about windows on CHRISTMAS i am MERRY and JOYFUL because i am not on WINDOWS

Dont worry I'm being told I need to dress up in a Christmas way and run 4.5 miles tomorrow
dress up as the christmas spirit and tell them you'll be there in spirit
I might be wearing a bow like a present
seems he is mostly burnt out on running AoC, particularly with all the genAI going around using it as a benchmark.
this year was 12 instead of 25, added checks to make basic auto download scripts fail, and removed global leaderboards entirely
Additionally, the final task was an evil troll that no AI could solve but a human could if they check the input which is totally what I did and I didn't waste 5 hours of my life optimizing a packing algorithm to the impossible).
Well now I have to hear about it
See I've never used the windows explorer tabs because my workaround (staggering them diagonally for easy access to any of them) is so engrained in me.
It also means each one is accessible from the taskbar! (I use uncollapsed tasks and task buttons hsowing the window title, of course)
i use hide-until-hovered centred bottom taskbar with grouped icons only because in my heart of hearts i know the fruity mac era was the height of ui design 🙂↕️
and really when you remember the win+1-9 hotkeys for opening pinned programs there's not much point in seeing the taskbar most of the time
Casey i wish I could show you my work desktop
Three virtual windows
Virtuoso in one
At least six open terminals
Grouped icons is one of my chief dislikes about using a Mac
Spoken like someone who clearly doesn’t have way too many Firefox, notepad, and explorer windows open (as well as many other programs)
If I am ever forced to spend long on a computer with no additional monitors OR virtual desktops, I might actually die
you simply cannot comprehend the number of firefox windows and tabs i have open
Tabs in each terminal. Vim in multiple tabs
Multiple buffer per vim
No dogs at my feet unfortunately
Anyways
I'm sold on induction
sickos.jpg
Aunt and uncle have this thing
Product | Impulse https://share.google/EOVb4ohUbWxprStIa
I realize it's $7k
prove it
It's cool and I will eventually get an induction stove but it might take fifteen years
oooooooh i love a natural mapping on cooktop/range controls
also a fan of knobs. our induction range has silly buttons (presumably to cut costs) and i hate them, but induction was more important
natural mapping?
our induction range is touchscreen and it's genuinely the worst
if you splash something onto it it freaks out
The battery is insane
The 10kw i think is real
Boiling water in literally 30s
BUT the battery is a weak point and I'm not convinced a 10kw is necessary in my real life
from The Design of Everyday Things
when the controls are laid out in the same arrangement as the things they control, so it's immediately obvious which knob controls which burner and you don't have to have the (idiotic) labels telling you, like you do on stoves where the burners are in a square but the controls are in a line
Weak point = likely failure
I am reading that book
i recommend it overall, but some of it is a bit quaint, like the parts where he lavishly praises the hip new Macintosh computers
I mean but like look at my reading list lol
little rant: the light switches in my sisters appartment are basically laid out randomly and I always click the wrong one and its so fcking annoying xD
our father did the switches in my childhood home and he took care to make sure theyre logical (like top left switch turns on the lamp thats "top left" if you overland the switches onto the room from where youre standing)
and we always took that for granted til we moved out
ooo, good design
-# didn’t they steal ibm’s design anyway back during that era
wow I had thought I had gotten past the name confusion
iro and ichor are like rust and godot. i know they're different, but i do not and never will know why or even what they are
they are not eachother or any of the other things. and i think that's beautiful
it's a very mixed metaphor but i don't have to make sense on christmas
Rust is better C, Godot is better GameMaker.
merry christmas
tbh that is super close to the max unsigned 64 bit value
yeah that was the issue, it was just a branch not terminating until rollover, then presenting the pre-rollover value
I'm currently debugging handling of linux syscalls
I mean rust and Godot aren’t even the same type of thing.
Iro and ichor are both people, as far as I know
it made sense to me when i started writing it
i think my brain was just christmas carols by the end
jingle bell jingle bell jingle bell
Have they recovered, or have the carols simply taken deeper root now
the big empty room in my head is just another place to store food now
so chritsmas music is playing there
th vhocolatdz have to go somewhee

Okay
Ichor has a garden. Iro has a dog

I think this is part of why I don’t distinguish their mods strongly

How about now
get that bag kirby
Merry Christmas, programming fans
Apparently someone won the billion dollar lottery last night
not me tho

I think we've given up on Christmas gifts (good)
we don't do Christmas gifts really
what's that supposed to mean

u have good-er opinion
You're less opiniated
Just quickly.
- Which maple syrup
- I'm looking for running shoes
- Kettles
Are you asking generally for advice?
- costco
- idk
- breville if you can taste plastic kettles
- Fresh
- Asics
- Rommelsbacher if you can get that where you live
No it's three things I knew ichor has opinions on
preferred tv adaptation of journey to the west 📝
Reddit chives
Look i wanted good opinions from the good opinion haver
Even if i disagree with said opinions
cowardly answer
- Something Canadian
- I had success with Nikes back in the day
- Mine is Philips and it works fine
I'm not a hardcore runner tho so take the running shoes with a grain of salt
As somebody who's mother worked at Philips, don't get that nowadays for home appliances. The hygiene stuff is made in-house and the light bulbs are made by a good manufacturer, they are okay, but the appliances get more shoddy by the day, because those were sold to a Chinese investment firm in 2021 (no racism, the big issue is the investment firm part).
Speaking of kettles, apparently the market for 120V kettles has completely different (and mostly worse) models.
So in order to get a good kettle, move to Europe!
get a 240V outlet installed just for your kettle
my philips airfryer has been with me reliably for over 10 years now
and I got it second hand
idk what my kettle is
works tho
and it's european of course
I effing love how you guys took the questions literally
Never change
These are ichor's running shoes:
Barefoot Shoes | Minimalist Footwear | Xero Shoes https://share.google/61YwWGoSysFWG8Gf2
I'm partial to Brooks Launchers myself...used to love the old Nike Airs Free too
how do know these are ichors running shoes
Anyways
Y'all pendants can have actual questions
- Which video game console
- Ring Fit Adventure....yea or nah
I’m not a pendant I’m a pedant
I have considered
The only hard part is the drywall work
That's before 2021, so it's still good. But don't buy new appliances. Unfortunately not worth it.

- Wii U
- Yeah, but the Switch 2 JoyCons don't have the pulse reader (and likely don't fit the equipment anyway)
What about a ninja creamy
Ninja isn't famous for their quality, so... I recommend a PacoJet if you have the money.
I'm not that attached to ice cream tbh
Looking at reviews, and apparently if you use it every day you can expect small stuff like the lid to break within a year.
only thing I plan on buying some time next year is a food processor
never had one but they seem nice
For me it says 7000€ on the webpage.
that's a dubious article number why does it end in 5 zeroes
As for ninja, I liked the blender
7000 euros??
Yeah, I'm not a professional chef
is this an industrial appliance
Yes
You usually don't buy them directly.
Anyways
I worked in gastro for two months, trust me, I'm an expert!!1!
In the great freedom states I can go rent liquid nitrogen for $250
when I discover a million euros in my couch I'll go get one
Ye ha!
All I need is a driver's license, which proves my cryogenic handling capacity
Which one? I sell all kinds.
Anyways, crumble, I see you're not a sale for the 7000 euro ice cream machine
What about the $7000 induction range
Tbh I'm pretty convinced that 30s boiling water is nice
But I'm less convinced on the implementation (battery???? Battery lifetimes are short)
I mean, if you can exchange the battery, it makes sense.
a battery for a kettle?
all the electric kettles I've ever had were ones you had to plug into a wall
it really is
I can be a bit more chill about batteries than most people (fun fact....most batteries are just a bunch of standard cells spot welded together...) but at $7k I'm
it is yes
Meh
the kettle I got at uni is both fast and quiet and I love it
I usually boil my water in the kettle and then transfer into the pot if I need boiling water
and it has an internal guide for exactly one cup
some people did that at uni because of our shitty stove top but both the tap water and the communal kettle were so nasty that I refused to
Talking about this stove
I boil my water by making it angry.
I could ignore the tap water because I was boiling it, but the kettle had so much scale that it covered the top of the water like a weird flakey film
If i die in an industrial accident involving "why the fuck are you running 240V for your kettle, atra", I blame you guys
(the joys of living south of london meant our water had oil slick rainbows in it)
you should just run 240V for your entire house
120V is just silly
120V is fine for literally everything else
I dont even need a dryer
Also ngl I want rooftop solar and tbh I think 48V might be fineeeee
there's a couple houses near me with rooftop solar
When I die and someone has to sell the house I will laugh very hard
I guess someone was being optimistic
When my decisions will be explained to other people
(it's not even the adjusting kind, it's fixed angle solar panels on a gabled roof in the UK...)
just install an electric car charger and hook that up to your kettle via custom cord
(You joke but the process between installing a 240 for my dream car and a 240 for the kettle is the same)
i was only half joking because the tech connections guy did that
How about buying a car with a kettle instead of a radio?
also 120v is fine for kettles imo
I feel like you would be the kind of person who would try to generate enough energy to sell back to the grid atra
The issue is that the good kettles aren't produced for the 120V market.
I can be all cowboy EE I want as long as that part isn't in the grid
Thus we get weird ideas like "what if the kettle gets 240 but I run all lights off 48V DC"
my kettle does just fine and has for a decade now. it's not fancy but all I'm doing is boiling water, so...
You know my innovation of the year is stashing pre-workout at work for the caffeine
if only energy storage was more efficient so you could charge a battery then plug it into a battery powered generator that's connected to the grid
No, for the future house I think i will have a professional come in and do the final hookups
but alas, I hear storage is one of the weakest points of solar
I can wire everything else
Well, old appliances tend to be better anyway. Stuff gets more cheaply made by the year. All the money is being put into making it "smart".
you guys have those walls that you can do your own wiring in, don't you
like the hollow ones
you don't have to drill a conduit through brick
Sooner or later the market will be split between KettlePlay or Android Kettle.
ngl I think kettles are still fine for now, at least here in the UK where they start off very cheap
nobody is putting smart technology in the £6 kettle that Tesco sell
Yet...
it's still that dinghy white plastic that used to be used for all appliances like, fifteen years ago because they never bothered changing it, so I'm going with never
I'm a pessimist. I trust people to make the worst decisions possible. Being a Sonic fan has taught me that.
I'm also like, actually an electrical engineer
Just smart enough to do this, just dumb enough it do it dumb
Does this invoke the bus clause?
I think it’s a bit pricey, I have a ninja blender (very small, was maybe $50?) and that’s good enough for me to make smoothies. Ice cream makers are all $$ plus a huge hassle unless they’re $$$.
I didddd know this, because my brother used to run his electric racecar team
I do live in Europe! I also have a Philips airfryer and there's really nothing wrong with the quality of any of the stuff I have
Did you get it before or after 2021?
After, but I use everything heavily and I checked reviews before buying
I'm aware that some of it is made in China, but yeah
No problems so far and I can't afford fancy toasters
My toaster was like, 15-20 euros, I won't cry if it breaks lol
My milk frother is Brabantia, though
Iirc that thing was made in the Netherlands
So I'll assume it'll be buried with me
That being said, I do care for my appliances, so I expect them to last well in my single-person household
I think that's kinda the difference. I pay 70€+ and want it to last 20 years. And Philips definitely no longer fits that. But if it works for you, that's great. And with proper care no appliance is wasted unless there's planned obsolescence involved.
I once tried to fix a broken toaster
I can confirm that disassembly is not a good way to fix
I expect to upgrade eventually, since the only thing I spent more than €50 on was the airfryer - but that thing is solidly built from the feel of it
I'm biased against them, but if the airfryer works and doesn't break, then that's also a valid experience. Don't let me tell you what to buy.
But if I were to tell you what to buy, I'd tell you to buy PinkSerenity™ appliances only.
What I really want is one of those fancy coffee machines
My little nespresso machine is great for an entry-level professional's home with limited counter space, but one day
Portafilter?
It's a kind of machine. Do you want a manual one or a fully automated one?
I don't have enough room for one rn so I didn't do any research into them beyond going "oooo" at the Mediamarkt
Probably an automated one? I have no idea what sorts exist lol
(Note that I'm 25 years old and fresh out of university, this is a purchase I'll be making... 5 years down the line)
Automated ones are kinda like the vending machine ones except you don't need money. Those are good if your sense of taste is equivalent to the skill required to control one of those
There are others, where you can directly control the pressure of the steam against the coffee powder. I want to buy one of those some day, but I'm 23 and still in university, so...
Probably need the manual one then lol
I like my coffee
I mean, if you're happy with the Nespresso, then the automated one is enough. I was talking from the perspective of a coffee snob.
Oh the nespresso came with the house, my preferred way is to make Indian filter coffee
I use the nespresso out of necessity because I didn't have access to good Indian coffee for a while and the bag my dad brought me needs to last
Ohhhh. Those are good. Really special taste. I don't think you will be happy with an automated machine, then. Nothing really comes close to that taste. It's really special.
Filter coffee is what I grew up with, nothing beats it for me
We get premade decoctions in India for convenience, and even those taste fantastic compared to nespresso capsules
you grew up with coffee?
I also grew up with coffee.
I went to high school in India, crumble
You think I'd have made it out in one piece without coffee?
I barely know what the Dutch are doing in my defense
The hardest variety, too

The equivalent of gymnasium difficulty-wise, just without latin and greek lol
In the hierarchy of high school education, anyway
All Douwe Egberts instant all the time. /j
I've had perhaps 1 full cup of coffee over my lifetime so far, taking sips here and there
God, imagine if I did have Latin and Greek
I had Latin. Do not recommend.
Douwe Egberts' good stuff is drinkable, to be fair to them
The slop they serve on KLM flights on the other hand is an abomination
my work's coffee is apparently pretty decent
I already had Hindi for a while and it was ridiculously difficult - my mom speaks it as her first language and she struggled to tutor me
Adding Latin to the mix would've been disastrous
which is DE
Ye DE's good stuff is perfectly fine
I have a bone to pick with KLM's catering in general tbh
i did VWO but not gymnasium so no Latin or Greek
To be fair, coffee won't ever taste really good on flights because you're sense of taste is impacted there.
They only serve vegetarian food on the Indian flights, and they don't serve much of it
I was so fucking hungry by the time I landed in Bangalore because we only got one small lunch and a small snack on an 8 hour flight
I think on my flight to Sweden it was just a sandwich with cheese
When I go back I'll be packing some snacks
I imagine they have an actual meal on flights further away
That's... really not much for that duration.

KLM is supposed to be on the fancier side
