you still generally want to carry the backpack, even 1 extra slot goes a long way. In my Ascent 5 packless run, I needed a heatpack, lantern, rope cannon, and filling food. Because I only had 2 slots (Flare), I had to ditch my lantern and not carry food to get up an icy cliff with the heat pack and rope cannon, having to pray for a heat source and food for the night.

I don't mind rng and tough areas, but man it drives me crazy when a behaviour is not working the same everytime. You either get cover behind trees / walls or you don't. Reading in the bugreport threads i found that storm damage might be tied to light levels which ok makes sense when you're in the storm not hiding behind cover XD

Yeah, the pack doesn't weigh anything, so it's pretty much definitionally better to have it then not, at the worst you can just chuck it before a climb, but realistically being able to carrying some extra useful items is often worth the stamina.

The Alpines is automatically the worst just because of the weather conditions. And for sure the volcano, the optimal path is rather easy to find since it's much thinner

the hazards in mesa will be the sun, tornados, and antlions. I think that's better than a storm that covers the entire section and stops you from moving. Tornados will prob keep you moving and be far more mechanically interesting.
