Depends on the type of redwood
A lot of "redwood trees" are actually just really big pine trees and spread their seeds like any other pine tree (pinecones)

The Sequoiadendron giganteum you see in California still have cones like pine trees, but those spread thanks to beetles and as you said, forest fires, which open the cones and the seeds bury themselves in the extremely nutrient-rich ash of the tree
