AP = armor penetration. Almost always some kind of solid metal from tungsten to depleted uranium cause you need that PUNCH! To create a hole in armor.

Against human targets, AP rounds are either just a solid slug that can punch a hole through armor plates. Cause a round to the chest is gonna drop a target regardless,

Discarding Sabot peels away after the initial punch. Like anti tank rounds that then explode inside the tank after punching a hole through the armor.

Flechette, in general, is a lot like buckshot. Not very effective on it’s own if a target is armored. Especially outside of close range. Peppering an enemy with flechette from 50+ yards wont do much if they are wearing actual combat body armor.

Overall point is that if firing at armored targets, flechette by itself is not very effective.

And ammo is (generally) also mission specific. If a seal team is going into a base and itel says everyone is just wearing fatigues, they don’t need the fancy ammo

Uh- I’m just wondering here, AP, sure can be a broad term but usually refers to the solid steel slugs you might see out of a tank from WW2

Discarding sabots are only there to make sure a sub caliber that normally would would not fit in the barrel, can, these are immediately ejected after leaving the barrel

Like- think an APDS round that may only be 60mm wide needs to fit on a 105mm wide barrel, it needs a sabot to make sure it can fit

Unless you are trying to refer to say- a steel jacket that some APFSDS rounds (like 3BM42) have used, or APDS, but the jacket in APDS is only there to keep all the parts of the projectile together and/or to make it more aerodynamic
