No no no... what you rolled determined the type of hit you did, whether you hit or not. Often rolling low but still hitting was better than rolling high and hitting. You could adjust your results based on how many "weapon proficiency" slots you put into an unarmed fighting style. If you put 5 proficiency slots into an unarmed style you got a +5 to hit and could also adjust the roll on the 1-20 chart by 5 positions to determine the knockout chance, which then had to be rolled by the target. It is massively complicated.

Also, no, it wasn't just about thac0. It was the unarmed table. I played a cleric once in 2e that put all his weapon proficiencies into boxing but had a 5 strength... and mostly what I did was cast group buffs, but then, if combat was still going on, I would cast a spell that set my strength to 16... and because all of the buffs, I'd be punching straight through orcs heads.

thats honestly a good question! both scarf and I have only use endeavourOS, which is essentially just Arch but with a number of preinstalled utilities to make it easier for people who aren't power users. imho it's gonna be a thing of personal choice, but as for why eOS works for us:
it's arch, via pacman/yay you can install pretty much anything from the arch user repo, super easy
comes packaged with KDE desktop, I havent tried any other desktop environments but this one is real stable and quite similar to win10 in terms of appearance. here's my desktop for example
overall it was super duper easy to get setup and you can mostly treat it like you would a win 10 pc, with the more notable differences being the file structure and using terminal a bit more, but that's it.

really have no experience with others, but endeavour works well for us, so +1 from me :)

I got like 36 hours into the game, I could try a modded server but I joined some and to be honest it's insane that 99% of servers have 180+ to some having 670+ mods to install like what the heck?

And I know I'm new but those servers are usually also looted dry so idfk what to do since even vanilla on harder settings at least lets you spawn with some loot

I used all the experience I had previous to learn exactly what I wanted from mods, and I highly encourage new players to play vanilla for a while before playing with mods for the same reason, to learn how you want to play the game.
