The game simulates all NPCs simultaneously with social behaviors and actual incentives and intentions. Their social behaviors are very complex and can lead to weird emergent gameplays, such as the one shown in the video, where I walked into an undiscovered outpost and two people have been fighting for a while. For the most part, the game does not care about the player. NPCs are simulated regardless of where the player is. Though, currently most outposts just spawn ammos for NPCs because making ammo is a complicated pipeline, but other things still require them to do manual labors, such as farming, lumberjacking and cooking.
The game feels very alive and I really like it. It feels like being a nobody in a zombie apocalypse.

the thing i like the most is that every interaction in the game is a consequence of something. you see two outposts becoming enemies because the leaders got into a fist fight and one was a sore loser. two survivalists got into fights because long long time ago they were lovers, but now they broke up (yes the game talks a lot about romance for some reason). if you want to experience the true chaos I recommend playing sandbox mode because it's all procedurally generated. you can crank up the settlement density but depending on your cpu, it can lag the game a bit
