  • doylist: they didn't want Rosalina to have an emotional growth moment and wanted to focus more on Bowser and Peach because their emotional tone fits what they wanted to do better
  • watsonian: Rosalina wasn't in any situation even in the original games where she would have like. significant screen time unless you made her part of the travelling group which imagine the concept of Rosalina just standing there and not just using space magic

But I think Rosalina is in a weird spot because in-game she is not really in any actual danger... She sorta just got robbed but is otherwise not put in great enough stakes to warrant any reactive action from her

Actually even though she is powerful there too, she still has certain priorities that stop her from confronting the threat directly... She helps Mario breach Bowser's galaxy but otherwise she just keeps most of his forces busy while Mario confronts the final boss

for the record despite my complaints, I still like the first movie, it's a pretty enjoyable watch and wouldn't ever mind going back to it

I still think it was a bad idea to call this “the super mario galaxy movie”
It gave a wrong expectation that the film would go to lengths that the game did story wise
